Supra-Malleolar Orthosis?

Any experience with this? My daughter's ankles turn inward, so EI wanted to try these. She isn't walking independently, but will walk with push toys. She doesn't like shoes on her feet, but I'm hoping they'll make her a little more stable.

Re: Supra-Malleolar Orthosis?

  • A Supra-Malleolar Orthosis is also referred to as a SMO. DS2 wears them for pronounced pronation for both feet. Ours were custom made through the Cascade company (we had a prescription from our physical therapist).

  • Nate had custom SMO's for about 4 months. The SMO's gave him a more secure feeling. He now wears inserts in his shoes to correct pronation. (ankles/feet turning inward)

Have you seen a physiatrist or a orthopedist? It is my understanding that EI cannot prescribe interventions such as braces/orthotics. (I could be wrong since EI seems to be a mixed bag state-to-state.) Have they given you any guidance beyond saying you ought to try them? Are they going to supply the SMO's? Some can be ordered online with a couple of foot measurements.

If she doesn't like shoes, there may be a bigger issue that you may need an additional professional to look at. She may need more support the an over the counter SMO can provide. I would see if you can get her evaluated outside of EI.

ETA: Maybe the reason why she does not like shoes is that they force her foot into the correct position. If there is some tightness in the ankle and foot area this could be a bit painful. This may be another reason why you would need to go a more custom route.....

Thanks for the advice. Our PT through EI has wrote a letter to DD2's pediatrician reccomending them. The pediatrician will write up a script for me to go to a orthodics place to get her fitted. I guess there's no need to go to another doctor unless we have more issues?
