...not DD! ![]()
So DD had not gained a lot of weight between her 4 and 6 month visit. Now she has officially lost weight and is back to her 4 month weight.
Pedi says she seems fine (hitting milestones, checked blood, not anemic) so we just need to focus on getting more calories into her.
She suggested either adding 8 oz of formula or 1 cup of cereal with fruit / veggie. I'm leaning towards the cereal since she has been EBF (she basically refuses a bottle - esp from me). (Though I do wonder if she would take a bottle if it didn't have BM in it...)
This also throws BLW out the window. We started last week and DD hadn't really taken to it. The good news (or it made me happy) is that I fed her a little bit of cereal yesterday to try it out and she took to that MUCH better than she had taken to BLW! She loved the spoon. I had to help her a little bit with it but she totally got the concept that it goes in her mouth and there's something on it that also goes in her mouth. So that's a big relief to me - I was worried I was going to have to fight her to get food into her which I did NOT want to do.
Anyway.... so I'm sort of flustered. She was in the 60s percentile wise from birth to 4 months. Now she's down to less than 10.
She's been EBF and on demand so I don't know how she's not getting enough.
DD has always been kind of chill when it comes to feedings - in the early days I had to wake her up in the night to feed her - so maybe she doesn't complain when she's hungry? And since I've been going off her cues, maybe she's not getting enough. Ugh.
So....I feel like I'm back to the early days again....I'm going to nurse as much as possible (DD never refuses the boob) and start feeding her cereal. We're doing a follow up in a month and hopefully she'll be back in the positive direction.
If anyone has experience with weight issues around this age, I'd love to hear any advice or stories!
Re: *I'm* supposed to be the one losing weight...
We never dropped weight but DS dropped from the 30th to the 2nd percentile between his 6 month and 9 month visits. We were encouraged to keep night feedings. Does DD STTN? If not, I definitely wouldn't sleep train. If she does, I'd probably try adding a dream feed
If she's doing ok with the spoon you might try some higher fat foods. Avocado or full fat yogurt would probably have much more impact than cereal and veggies.

This. And you don't need to completely drop finger foods if you don't want to. I drop some finger foods in front of DS so he has something to explore/eat/play with while I'm making up purees.
Yeah, DD has been STTN since pretty early on. Even in the early days I had to wake her to feed her. I think the last time she woke during the night was around the 4 month mark? We never sleep trained for STTN....she just likes her night time sleep. (We did sleep train to help her learn to fall asleep....but that was about a month ago and hasn't seemed to affect her STTN.)
Yeah, I might try to get some avocado in her; yogurt is a good suggestion too.
When I told the pedi what solids she had tried, I mentioned she had tried avocado but she wasn't too into it but cucumbers were her favorite. Pedi was like "Well, avocado has a lot of good fat and calories so that's a good choice. Cucumbers offer a lot of vitamins and minerals, but not so many calories..." Yeah.
Yeah, I'll probably keep offering her some finger foods but I don't think I have the luxury of letting her explore them at her own pace since I need to make sure she gets the calories. But yes, I hope to still incorporate finger foods.
Did your LO actually lose weight or just go down in percentiles?
When she was up weight but down percentiles at her 6 month visit, no one (me, pedi) was too concerned, but now that's she actually lost weight it's not great.
I am sort of surprised she hasn't started night waking to eat but she hasn't. She *has* been getting up earlier in the morning (sometimes as early as 5 (yikes!)...usually now 6 when she had been sleeping til 7:30). So maybe that's her version of night waking?
If she's STTN you're probably going to need to offer the boob pretty darn frequently during the day. How often does she nurse?

Usually 5-6 times a day...I try for 6 but sometimes one gets "lost" if a nap runs long or we're out and she's not acting hungry...I aim for every 2.5-ish hours, but try to go by her cues (sometimes it's 2 hrs....sometimes 3.5 hrs). And sometimes (not too often) there are days when she wants 7+ nursing sessions.
So....I don't know if I'm misreading her cues or she just doesn't make her hunger known. I would think that she'd wake up during the night if she wasn't getting enough.
Thanks, sccalla. I've thought about going to a lactation consultant to talk about this....maybe i will. Thanks for sharing your experience!
