Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Hand foot mouth - don't agree with dr...

Im conflicted and dont know what to do. Here is some background....

DS is almost 3 months and I took him to the dr last night and they said he had HFM. He doesn't have mouth thankfully. The last few days he had been vomiting, dr said he had a bug. Then yesterday he developed the rash.

We saw a dr we haven't seen before at our practice and he prescribed mupirocin in case it turned to impetigo. He assured me it wasnt but in case. He said it can sometimes lead to imoertigo. I didn't  know what that was so I excepted his directions and got his rx and did a dose of it before bed.

Dh's cried and cried when putting on this ointment. I looked and it said it would probably burn on application. And today his chin, where the most ointment went is bright red.  I have been looking up HFM and aloof the reputable sites like wemd, mayao, cdc, say there is no real treatment, just Tylenol. So why did dr give me this ointment for something he doesn't have and what he does have needs no treatment.

The rx sheet says its not to treat viral infections. HFM IS a viral infection...WTH?

I don't know what to do! I don't want to medicate his sores for something he doesn't have it need but I don't want to go against drs orders, it just doesn't seem right..l

  • I would stop using the cream and call the doctor. It sounds like he could be having an allergic reaction to it.

  • My friend's LO had HFM when she was 7 months old. They didn't treat it with anything at all, she said it was hell, but she was over it in a week or so.

I think the cream was preventative for another illness, so if you don't feel like giving it then don't. You're not "going against doctor's orders", you're just choosing to go med-free. Nothing wrong with that.

If it were me, I'd stop the cream. LO will be better soon, I promise!

  • My daughter had this a few months ago and had terrible sores around her toes. The doctor did not give us anything to put on them, just said we had to wait for it to pass. If you are not comfortable with how your LO is reacting to something, then stop using it and call your pedi.

  • Didn't he give you the RX incase it turned impetigo?? Why are you using it now?

  • He said to start it immediately because it can turn into impetigo and that is what he customarily does with this kind of rash. I am not going to put anymore on him. Poor thing has been out all day, wokr up to eat and get tylenol and is sleeping again. Getting the prescription "in case" makes sense however, using it right now when its just HFM doesn't...I'm glad I am not thinking crazy. DH was skeptical of me not doing it since the dr told us to but my mommy insticts say that it isn't necessary right now. I have a call into the dr right now and am waiting to hear back...

  • My baby AND I had HFM last month. Our blisters are still healing! Yes, it passes in about ten days, but if the blister rash turns into open sores (as it did on us) a bacterial infection could develop. Our doc gave us an antibacterial cream that I appliec to the worst parts three times a day. GL! It's abaolute hell, but it will pass!

But you waited until the sores were opened, not when it was just a rash, right? I almost wonder if the dr wasn't really listening when I was asking questions. Still waiting for dr to call....
