Large fibroid found, should I worry?

We're still in the early stages of TTC, and I had my HSN test today, (the one with the saline injection) and the doctor said that I had a really large fibroid and that would explain why I've had some pain during the HSG exam and a little today during the HSN. The saline couldn't even get to where it was supposed to because the fibroid was in the way. She also said that before I even think about getting pregnant we will have to discuss taking care of that first. Has anyone here had surgery to remove fibroids? Are you put out for the procedure? Is it painful? And were you able to get pregnant without any problems?

I have one very large one too...but didn't even know til I was pregnant.  Mine is at the top of my uterus and on the outside so it didn't really cause any issue getting pregnant.  It may explain the first trimester bleeding I had.  And the theory is that it led to my csection - stalled at 8 centimeters and from what they could tell it looked like the top of my uterus wasn't contracting strongly enough due to the fibroid.  But, it didn't appear to cause any trouble getting pregnant or really with the health of the pregnancy - which was the most important issue to me.  I think it really depends on where it is and whether it is through the uterine wall or now. I just had mine checked and it has shrunk back to half it's largest size - but is still bigger than it must have been pre pregnancy.

  • I guess I'm just worried about it, I've never even heard of them until now.

  • DW had one that grew to over 12cm in diameter during her pregnancy (they did extra ultrasounds to watch it)---she could feel it through her skin.   It in no way affected her ability to get pregnant or affect pregnancy, because of where it was. PP is right that it really depends on the location of it and only your doctor can tell you that.

DW didn't know about it until our anatomy scan because it was small before she was pregnant, so we don't know its exact size.

One thing to know is that they are VERY common and most women never even know they have them.  Perhaps ask on a bigger board (0-3 months or TTC?) because I'm sure several people will be able to tell your their stories!

You are not alone and lots of women have successful pregnancies with fibroids!

  • I think fibroids always require a second opinion. My good friend from my infertility support group went through 7 IVFs with nothing. Then she switched clinics and a doctor found a fibroid (which clearly should have been detected by other doctors). They removed it. She did an IVF cycle and she got pregnant. The baby was born a couple of weeks ago.

She was led to believe so many other things were wrong with her -- she had the MTHFR gene mutation, she has an immunology issue, she had low ovarian reserve, etc.

TTC since April 2010, age 40, 3 miscarriages in total IVF w/PGD June 2012 - failed cycle with a genetically perfect embryo, unexplained infertility January 2013 - On to adoption!!!
