I'm interviewing doulas next week and looked up a few lists of questions to ask. They all seemed pretty generic--what's your training, how many births, do you have an emergency back up, etc., basically stuff I could find out on their websites.
What questions did you find helpful when interviewing doulas?
Re: Questions for a doula
1) What made you want to become a doula?
2) How do you feel about epidurals/if I have one what can you do to help me since pain management shouldn't be an issue?
3) What is you philosophy on birth?
These will give you an idea of how mother-oriented the doula truly is, and make sure that she isn't going to push you to do/avoid something. It really helped me to make sure my doula and I were on the same page.

This site has a questionnaire that you can print out. That is what I did.
I wanted to know what different methods (Bradley, Lamaze, Hypnobirth, etc) they were versed in to help me through labor or ask specifically the things they would do to help you through contractions.
I'd want to know how knowledgeable they are on different positions to try to help encourage an optimal birth position for baby.
Beyond that though, I just wanted to have conversations with the prospective doulas to get a sense of their personality and if we got along. With the three I interviewed the conversations veered pretty far from birth related things.
With one doula I was just tired of asking the standard rote questions and asked her to just tell me about herself, her philosophy and how she handles a client and birth. It really gave me insight into how well prepared she was and how much knowledge and passion she had for her job. If she just said "uh, what do you want to know?" then I would have known she probably wasn't for me, ya know?
