Sleeping at night or rather lack there of

We brought our beautiful baby girl home a week ago and we are having trouble getting her to sleep at night. She will wake up between 11:30-12:30 and won't officially go to sleep unless she is on our chest. She has no problems sleeping in her crib during the day it's just at night. Sometimes I wonder if she knows we want to sleep. I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone has any ideas of how to get her to sleep more then 20 minutes at a time during the night. Any ideas will be much appreciated!

  • Most newborns are born with their internal clock reversed.  Meaning they tend to sleep during the day and are awake at night.  They eventually get turned around, but it might take a month.  This is the reason people tell you to "sleep when the baby sleeps".  You likely won't be getting a full night's sleep for a very long time.  Personally, I've been letting DD sleep on my chest at night of it means I get an hour or two of uninterrupted sleep!

  • Have you tried swaddling?

Also, during the day (weather permitting) take her outside, keep lights on in the house, carry on with what you normally do. At night make sure it is dark. Like pp said, their clocks can be off.

Just remember, it might take a LONG time before she figures out her sleep schedule.

  • Totally normal for a newborn/infant! DS slept on us for months. You do what you have to do to get som rest.

  • Haha, welcome to parenthood! Newborns very very often have reversed sleep schedules and it can take quite a bit of time to switch them fully. And even when you do, they'll still be up ever 1-3 hours at night to eat. Swaddling is a great idea, as it gives them that feeling of cuddly security they love. Babies often do something called 'cluster feeding' too, where they eat very frequently in the evening or through the night, so that's normal as well. Otherwise, during the day you can gently help them adjust to a daytime schedule by keeping curtains open/lights on, doing regular things (running the dishwasher, vacuuming, etc), going for little walks, etc. Don't worry, your LO will switch, but be prepared for it to take time and, of course, sleep when the baby sleeps!

This -- DD loved being swaddled, and you have to do it nice and tight.  It would get DD to sleep -- it was a sad day for us when she started rolling and we had to stop swaddling.  lol
