Flu vaccination....did you get it?

OK, I am at about 13 weeks and the doctor keeps going strong about the flu vac.  Did you get it? I have been talking with people and doing research about the thimerosal (mercury) found in the vac and how it is linked to autism (well, mostly linked that is..). My gut tells me not to, but I want to hear what other moms-to-be are doing/thinking! :)  ( I guess I'm supposed to get it soon since I'm due in June)  What do you think or what did you do?

Re: Flu vaccination....did you get it?

  • I get it every year... and my Dr recommended it... so I got it last month.

  • I got it at my last appointment.  They said you really should get one, it was strongly recommended.  It's actually the first year that I got one and wasn't expecting it but seems I hadn't gotten one yet they just did it right then.
  • I got it a month ago at my ob's office.  Their shots don't have any Mercury and they said the pro's of getting the shot out-weigh the risks associated with getting it.
  • I didn't get it, only because I don't have a primary care doc at the time and my OB doesn't give them out. At this point, I will probably skip it. By the time I get in to see a new GP, the time to get one will be past.

    Just call me lazy.?

  • Yes, I got it at my first prenatal appointment a couple of months ago. My OB talked me into getting one the first time I was pregnant. I had never gotten one before that. So now I get them every year.

  • yup I got one two weeks ago - Doc said it was much better to have it then skip it.
  • Yep.  After experiencing the flu 36wks pregnant and wishing for a speedy death, I'm not taking that chance again.  It was a hell I can't even describe in words.  It nearly put me in the hospital because of the fever (ya....Tylenol kept it at about 101).  The chills, the body aches.....OMG, I wanted to die.  I couldn't sleep.  I just wanted NyQuil and couldn't have it.  I didn't sleep for 2 wks.  Finally, my OB gave me Ambien so I could get some sleep.

It lasted for 3 hellish weeks.  I kept praying I didn't go into labor because there was no way I could have dealt with that being so sick.

I got the flu in May, too, when I thought it was "safe".  It sucked.

  • I have gotten one the past 3 years and 2 pregnancies. It's safe. Some still have small amounts  of mercury in them, but if they do it is less than 1 tuna sandwhich and your body should pass it right out. If you are worried there are places that have the mercury free ones. you just have to get educated and know which brands do not contain them. I think CVS minute clinic has the mercury free ones. Good luck!
  • I got mine about a month ago.  Pregnant women are #2 on the list from the CDC to take the shot and my MW highly recommended it.

  • If  you are worried about it, and would otherwise get a flu shot, they do make thimerosal-free versions of the flu shot.  My DD and I both got those this year, and I did the same thing with my last PG just to be on the safe side.

  • I got it and have gotten it every year.  The one year I didn't get it I ended up getting the flu and it sucked!  I've never been so sick in my life.  I would HATE to get the flu while pregnant!

  • no, but I never get the flu shot. When it comes to medications I'm a "If it ain't broke don't fix it" person.

I live in an area where a doctor givving shots also gave everyone hepatitis because he re-used the syringes. After hearing that,  I'm not too keen on being poked with needles.

  • I got a preservative-free one two weeks ago, when I was 14 weeks.
  • I have never gotten the flu shot before, but I work for a hospital and they give it for free.  Every healthcare proffessional I have spoken with has urged me to get it.  I just think of what will happen if I do get the flu and cannot take any meds.  Bad.

  • I didn't get it nor do I want to or plan to. I have never got the flu shot and don't want to start now. Plus my doc has not said much to me about it.

  • I got it b/c it's recommended for pregnant women. The risks of the shot are a lot less than if you get the flu while pg. The APRN that gave it to me said the amount of mercury that would maybe be in it is like eating a tuna sandwich, nothing to worry about.
  • I got it at the beginning of Oct. I think the autism thing is a load of garbage myself, and the flu shot also protects your unborn baby for 6 months too!! infants can't get the shot before 6 months and ours will be born during flu season!!

  • Got mine on Tuesday. After what I went through last year with the flu I don't want to put myself or the baby at risk. I barely ate for seven days and should have drug myself to the hospital due to dehydration but I literally could not get out of bed. Took me forever to get over it.
  • Both my regular OB and my high-risk doctor basically required (as in, wouldn't see me anymore if I didn't get it).  The chances of getting the flu and your baby having problems (a link which HAS been medically documented by reputable organizations) is way higher than the chances of your baby having problems from the shot (a link which, as I understand it, HAS NOT been medically documented by reputable organizations). It's all a risk-benefit analysis.
  • I got it at my 9w appointment.
