XP: Pull Ups at Night?

I posted this on the 24 months+ board, but I thought it might help to post it here, too - Thanks!

DD is almost 33 months old. We're working on potty training right now. This is day 3. Monday night and last night we used a pull up at bedtime. Tuesday morning she was slightly wet and today she was completely dry.

I'm wondering if we should be using Pull-ups at all. I don't want to give her the impression that it's okay to go in her pull-up, but I've also read that some children are just not physically able to stay dry at night time.

What's your opinion? Stick with the pull-ups for now (at night) or underwear all the time until she gets the hang of it?

What do you do for plane rides or long car trips (like a 12 hour trip we have over the summer)?

Re: XP: Pull Ups at Night?

  • I would stick with pull ups until she gets the potty training down during the day or until she can go a month without wetting herself at night.  My DD was in pull ups for almost a year after she was potty trained during the day.   We currently have her in panties at night but we are using the good nights "pad".   She hasn't had an accident in 3 weeks!  they are almost like puppy pads :)

In the car, I'd keep her in panties but give her plenty of opportunities for potty breaks.

  • DS is 4.5 and still in nighttime pull-ups. He's been PT for almost a year. It's my understanding that nighttime PTing is biological and nothing that can be pushed. DS wakes up very wet and doesn't wake to go yet, so I'm not pushing it. I'm not worried at all. He'll be ready at some point.

  • We did the 3 day method with both of our girls, with the exception of at night.  When I trained DD1, we tossed all the diapers, bought the big girl panties, and then I bought some pull ups, but called them "ni-night panties."  So to her they were still big girl panties in a way.  I knew that she had never woken up dry and I know I struggled with wetting the bed until I was an older kid so I was compassionate with her on that. (not to mention I had a newborn at the time and wasn't going to wake up to nurse and take care of baby AND change sheets, jammies and all that as well)

Its what worked for our family and she has actually started in the last month waking up dry consistently and waking me up to go potty on her own so we have decided no more for her and she wears her big girl panties to bed now and has only had 1 accident.

As for car rides, I would either take along a potty chair for her or just plan on frequent potty breaks.  I also used small changing table pads that I had and put them under her car seat and she sat on one in case there was an accident.

We dealt with a car seat accident once and it was horrific in the summer time when it didn't get cleaned out well enough and the heat in a stuffy car and pee is NOT A GOOD SMELL!! lol

If you can manage it, a potty chair in the car is a life saver.  I try to avoid taking my kids in public restrooms whenever possible.  It's not such a big deal with my oldest now that he's old enough to do it mostly on his own and not touch everything, but it's so much easier to just have them go in the car as you're getting out and back in again.  Plus, when there is that, "I've got to go right this minute," moment you can pull over asap vs. looking for somewhere to stop.

My DS is almost 4.5yo, and he still wakes up sopping wet more often than not.  Once in awhile, he will wake up dry, but it's not very often yet.  I'm not worried or pushing it.  He'll get there.  He's been day-trained for well over 2 yrs.

  • My twin girls day trained at 33 months. I used pullups at night. About 6 months ago my one girls said she wanted to wear panties to bed. So we tried it and it went fine, she had only very few accidents in the first month and has been dry at night every since. My other twin just isn't ready. She wakes up wet most mornings and they will be 4 in a month. She asked to wear panties to bed about a month ago and we tried it just like with her sister. She did great for the first couple of days and then she wet herself on the fourth night. I expected this as it is normal, but what was a problem was she didn't wake up. She completely soaked herself and slept right through it until the morning. That tells me she is not able to wake up because she has to pee or even when she is peeing herself. So we put her back in pull ups for a while. I will wait a couple of months and see if she asks for panties at night again.

My BFF's daughter just stopped using pull ups at night right before she turned 5. Her older daughter was in panties at night when she was 2. So every kid is different. For now I would keep her in a pull up at night and wait until she asks to wear panties at night.

We just did a 15 hour drive with our girls 2 weeks ago and I put them in pull ups for the flight to DC, just in case we got stuck and couldn't use the bathroom. Also we used them during the 15 hour drive back home. They stayed dry the whole time and would tell us when we needed to stop at a rest area. But I am glad I had that as extra protection in case we couldn't get to a rest stop in time.

  • Thank you so much.

We are going to continue with the pull ups at night until she's been able to stay dry for quite a few days straight.  She had one accident out of 4 mornings this week, so that's pretty good.

I do have a little cloth to protect her carseat (like the kind on a changing table) so that should help.  Yes, we'll definitely take the potty seat on our long drives!

  • we still use pull ups at night and DD has been trained for ~ 9 months.  She wakes up dry most mornings and I've told her to just let me know when she wants to wear undies to bed, so far, she hasn't asked.

We've taken the little potty on road trips before, but honestly, its just as gross cleaning it out as using potty @ McDonalds or something, I just travel w/ wipes in my purse and wipe off the toilet, etc.  If she were serioulsy going to have an accident, she can always get out and squat (which she's done a few times when were hiking).

  • Stick with pull ups at night for now until you know how being day trained is going to affect her ability to hold it at night.

Night training is totally different than day training, believe me.  I have one child who became 100% night dry about a month after she was potty trained at age 2 1/2, and one who still wets the bed at the ripe old age of 7.

Sometimes, being able to "potty before bed" can help an older toddler or preschooler make it through the night consistently.  Biology takes over from there, and you won't have to do anything but make sure she empties her bladder before bed.

On the other hand, there's no "training" for night accidents if your child's brain isn't wired to wake up when she feels the "gotta go" feeling.  So, for now just keep her in a pull up until she's consistently dry at night and you're reasonably confident that she can go without.  When this will happen is more related to biology beyond your child's control than to "trying" to make it through the night.

    This for us too.

We drive 8 hrs regularly to visit family. The first time he wore a pullup b/c he sleeps off/on during the drive & I was afraid he'd pee in his sleep or need a potty asap when we couldn't find one. I actually forgot to put one on him for the drive back though & he did fine so since then we've just done underwear. It seems like we're constantly stopping for gas, snacks or for someone to pee so I just ask him every time we stop if he needs to go.

We did potty training very gradually and I had one DD that was waking up with a dry diaper most of the time.  When she used the potty the first thing in the morning, she would ppe a ton, so I knew she had a bladder of steel.  I let them decide when to go over to underwear full time and she actually decided to do it one night at bedtime.  I went with it and she's been in panties ever since (this was in Feb maybe?) with possibly one real accident overnight.  Her sister, on the other hand, still is in pull ups overnight and generally wakes up wet.  I'm going to keep her in pull-ups until she's consistently waking up dry.  For travel, I generally try to get them to wear a pull-up.  I'm not as worried about my bladder of steel child, but it's definitely a benefit to my other DD.  For example, we had a 5 hour flight a couple months ago and while we did use the potty on the plane, my one DD needed to use the potty again after we got off.  Well, we went to the potty, but there was a long line, so she wound up peeing in her pull up before it was our turn.  If she hadn't had a pull up on, it would have been quite the disaster.

  • Just to mirror what others have said. My DS1 has been fully potty trained during the day since he was 22 months but is STILL in pull-ups for night time at almost 4 years. He does not wake up dry (even when we wake him up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom). So clearly not ready. But I read girls do better overnight. Good luck.

  • DS1 will be 5 in September (OMG, I can't believe my baby's almost 5 Crying) and we still do pull ups at night.  Like the others have mentioned, for the car ride either take a potty or stop often for potty breaks.
  • DD will be 4 in September. We did pullups when she day potty trained last year but then tried just doing underwear because I didn't mind changing her bed everyday. Problem became her waking up in the middle of the night screaming because she was wet. So if she has a pullup on she doesn't ever do that. We will keep pullups until she's dry for a couple weeks in a row. Right now it's dry 2-3x a week.
