5.5weeek ultrasound scared

This is my first pregnancy and had to take clomid to get here.  I am being watched very closely by the Fertility Doctor.  My HCG levels continue to rise and are totally normal, my progesterone dropped slightly last week and they put me on vaginal suppositories.  Numbers were great this week.  Had my second ultrasound on Tuesday and was said to be at 5 weeks 5 days but they only saw the gestational sac, and the Doctor thought we should see more, he said this could go either way and said the baby may not be growing and I have a missed AB, But not to give up yet, I am going back next Thursday and praying to see yolk sac, heart beat, ect.  Has anyone had an early ultrasound and had this happen?  The nurse called with my HCG levels and said they were 7774 and that the yolk sac and such is seen between numbers 6000-11000.  So she said to be cautiously optimistic and to cross fingers.  I'm scared, worried and sad.  I really want everything to be ok.  Congrats to all!

Re: 5.5weeek ultrasound scared

  • i just went yesterday and they found two gestational sacs but only one with a yolk - i'm going back as well. from what i've read in my research it's normal and you really shouldn't get discouraged yet.

  • Hang in there. As earlier posters said early ultrasound can be inaccurate. I'm going through a similar thing. At 6 weeks I had an ultrasound and they could see the sacs and nothing else. I go in on Monday to see if there is any change. Finger's crossed for you that everything will be right on track! Congratulations!

Development is very VERY day-by-day at this point. You would be amazed what a difference a few days makes. This is why I chose not to do a u/s until 7.5 weeks because I want to make darn sure that when I go, I'll see a heartbeat, rather than inconclusive stuff.

I hope your next u/s goes wonderfully :)

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • Thank you so much everyone!!  Keeping fingers crossed for everyone!
  • They also saw only a sac with mine, but I told her before I thought I ovulated late because my last period started over 6 weeks ago and I know I'm not that far along.  I'm going back in two weeks in hopes of seeing more.

I also found this website which confirmed the gestational sac alone may not be seen until late in the 5th week and the smaller parts inside not seen until later than that.  Don't give up hope!

  • Most people I know who has an U/S before 6 weeks could only see the sac. I wouldn't worry yet. That's WHY many doctors won't do U/S so early. Because it worries people unnecessarily.
  • My RE won't even do an ultrasound until 7 weeks so that people don't get concerned with fetal development because things are changing SO quickly in the first few weeks - especially when you can't pinpoint day of implantation.

I know it's hard, but hang in there!

  • I've had things go both ways.

With my first pregnancy, I had an u/s at 5w3d and all the tech could see were the gestational and yolk sacs. I was concerned that she couldn't detect a fetal pole, but my son ended up being fine.

With my next pregnancy, I had an u/s at 6 weeks and the tech could only see a small, misshapen sac. My betas were great, but I knew deep down that things weren't going well because the yolk sac and fetal pole weren't seen.  I ended up having a blighted ovum.

Like a pp said, a day or two at this stage of development can make such a huge difference in what can be seen on an ultrasound.  Was your scan transvaginal? I had an abdominal scan yesterday and it was virtually impossible to see inside the sac. My OB could see the yolk sac, but he couldn't take any measurements.

I hope your next appointment is more reassuring!

  • I was only able to see a sac at my 5 week u/s.  I had another at 6w1d, and saw a strong hb, so stay strong!  You have no reason to worry - it would be *abnormal* to see a hb that early.  :o)
