Preemies

Introduction

Hello ladies. I've been lurking the last few days and figured it was only fair that I introduce myself.

Ive recently had my first baby, a beautiful boy named Evan. He was due August 5 and born on June 8... At 31w5d. My pregnancy was easy. I thought I was in the home stretch   Other than some swelling I had no complaints. Then on the Monday before he was born that all changed. I started to see some spots and we took my blood pressure and it was really high. The doctor said that I needed to get to triage to get checked out... They then admitted me for the night.  The next day was the worst day of my life. I went from "we are just watching you" to severe pre-eclampsia and told that I would not be leaving the hospital pregnant.  I was so scared for my baby and didn't care about the risks to me but my husband clearly worried about us both. Seeing him cry and feel so helpless broke me. I'll never forget sitting in the hospital room holding each other and crying. Not knowing what tomorrow held for us. That day I got my first steroid shot for the baby's lungs..."just in case".

The next day things were better. My blood pressure was under control with meds. I was still on iv's and bed rest. They told me we were shooting for 34 weeks. I found out later this was never the plan.  I got my second shot that day.

The next morning I was told I was being induced.  The baby had both shots and I was so bad that waiting was too risky.  The first induction try didn't work. The next morning they tried again... It worked, and fast.

I had my son at 6:48 at night.  They surprised me and let me hold him for a few seconds after nicu examined him and before they took him. I knew I wouldn't see him for at least 24 more hours ( due to mag drip/bed rest) so it meant the world to me. He was 3 lbs 5.6 oz and 17 inches and crying immediately.

He was taken off the nasal Canula by the next morning and on day 4 he was taken off his iv (fluids) he hasn't needed any meds so far and yesterday he gained 5oz (after losing the days before). He had a touch of jaundice but so far he's been my rockstar.  We have no idea when he is coming home and that is the hardest part. We spend most of every day at the nicu with him but because of the hospitalization we are trying to get our house and lives in order again to prepare for him coming home.

Sorry this is so long. I think I needed to write it out as much for myself to believe it as an Introduction.  I look forward to getting to know you all.

  • First off Congratulations on your little guy. Welcome!

Reading your story really hit close to home for me. I had my first DD due to pre-e pretty much the same exact way you did. It does help to write about it and talk about it. It sounds like Evan is doing really well for a 31weeker. I pray that you has a short NICU stay and that you get to bring home soon.

    Please keep us posted.

  • Welcome and congratulations! I'm glad your son is doing well - the NICU is a difficult place to be - but I hope your stay is quick and uneventful!

  • First of all, congratulations on the arrival of your baby boy.  I know there doesnt seem like much to celebrate right now but from your post it seems like he is doing very well.  Its a tough road.  I will keep you, your little man and your family in my thoughts and prayers.  I dont post here much but the ladies on here that do are AMAZING!

Second, I feel like I could have written your story myself, except for the induction.  What hospital did you deliver?  I see that you are in Philadelphia, I am not too far from there.

Welcome and congrats on your baby boy! I know this is a scary time but when you said in your intro that it helped you to write this totally hit home with me, journals journal the whole time dd was in the NICU and continue to write in it now that she is home. DD was born at 31 weeks 4 days. This board was/is a  great source  of support! I hope you have a short and uneventful NICU stay!

  • Thank you all. I keep trying to remind myself that this is only temporary and that one day I'll look back and be amazed at how tiny my son was. He has really long legs and arms and dh and I are both talk so I have a feeling once he starts putting on weight he'll be a big boy.  He gained 5 oz the other night (then lost .5 oz and gained it back last night) the doctors were shocked and so were we!
