I'm altering my diet and taking away sugar. I'm still eating all fruits and veggies and the occasional natural sugar like honey or pure maple syrup. I've just been feeling like crap lately and gaining a ton of weight so I thought I'd give it a real try. Researching sugar addiction inevitably leads to eating healthier in general. I'm having problems coming up with ideas to eat for snacks after dinner. I would normally eat ice cream or something or reach for chips/crackers.
Anyone have ideas? How do the kids do?
Re: Anyone have a sugar-free diet/real food, clean eating household?
I try--not very good at it right now, though. Here are some snacks I like:
Hummus & veggies
I like sugar snap peas since they have a bit of sweetness naturally
Fruit with natural PB
string cheese (assuming you eat dairy?)
handful of nuts
roasted broccoli and cauliflower with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese

I found that once you eliminate sugar from your diet, that snacks after dinner aren't really necessary. I find the more sugar I eat, the more I crave it.
Some low sugar snacks that I do enjoy are pepperoni and cheese. My husband likes olives. Carrots + ranch dip, or veggie dip. Nuts are always good. I also like to take cashews and dip them in soft cheese spreads like boursin. The salt+cheese is awesome. Sounds gross, but really is good. I've been lovin' some hard pamesean cheese and just eating it as is.
I need to get back to eating healthy
When I was better with my eating I would have things like kale salad or dried cranberries. I'm not big on sweets so I'd cut up tomatoes, cucumber, cheese and some type of beans, throw them together and put some vinegar or other dressing on them. If I did have sweets I'd make sure I had tiny portions, and try not to have them every night.
We just made this switch about 2 months ago. The first thing I switched was snacks. The easiest thing is to just have fresh fruit and veggies on hand.
I also have been making different kinds of trail mix with nuts, seeds, dried fruits and spices, and popping popcorn with the kids.
Thanks for the ideas ladies.
I think since this is only day 4 of my no sugar eating I'm just starving all of the time. Today I've eaten:
Breakfast- 1/8 leftover quiche with spinach, mushrooms, carmelized onions and freshly grated pamesan cheese
Snack- plain greek yogurt with blueberries and banana with 1 tsp honey
Lunch- refried beans in a whole wheat tortilla and sprinkle of cheese.
I've had 36 oz water and just a sip of my coffee b/c it made me feel sick on an empty stomach. I just feel completely empty and ravenous.
Eat more!!
You shouldn't be hungry!! Shove your face full of fruits and vegetables. Mostly, vegetables. Grab a serving of hummus, and dip your veggies.
But, for that after dinner craving, I find that a handful of cherries or a few slices of watermelon really do the trick -- oooo, or really crisp, sweet grapes. I can just pop grapes like candy!!
When I started in September, I found that I was cutting back on food that was no longer necessary and I was never hungry. That made me sad because it brought on the realization that I was CRAZY OVEREATING before.
Good luck!!
My new fave go-to snack is a smoothie. It has an ice cream taste to me, and it really fills you up. This Dairy-free Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie is my favorite:
2-3 Bananas
3 T Plain Greek Yogurt
1.5 T Natural Peanut Butter
Just enough apple juice to submerge bananas
Then add approx 7 ice cubes
Blender & enjoy!
I try to avoid sugar as much as possible and eat more whole grain (avoiding white flour, pasta, rice).
I like the So Delicious Coconut Chocolate Mini's (they use agave) and are organic
I bake homemade banana muffins, pumpkin spice muffins and keep them on hand for snacks when I crave something sweet. I use agave in them. Sometimes I put chocolate chips in the banana one's and I found some sweetened with grains instead of sugar. (health food stores carry those).
I also just made popcicles - I used the Trader Joe's Lemonade - which uses Stevia. I have not tried them yet though....
It is hard to find things that don't contain refined sugars, flours. I have also made homemade oatmeal, peanut butter bites before and used a little stevia and honey in them. Sugar is in EVERY packaged food. Unless I make it myself, it usually contains sugar. Grrr! I wish there were more choices out there.
We did clean eating for a while but have fallen off the wagon. My favorite snack after dinner was berries or pineapple in plain Greek yogurt with flax seed meal or another option is a handful dried apricots and almonds.
