Cloth Diapering

Problems with Charlie's Soap? Article link in post...

Was just looking for some reviews/articles to send my mom on laundering cloth diapers and I came across this. Scroll to the bottom to the type in red to see the specific warnings against Charlie's Soap.

After reading reviews previously and referring to the CD spreadsheet I bought and prepped all my diapers with Charlie's Soap - I was happy enough with it, seemed to rinse very clean. We have the kind of washer that drains into a utility sink and the water from the extra rinse cycle was crystal clear, no bubbles or signs of residue in the sink, but since we'll obviously be using our washing machine for other household laundry I'm wondering if I should switch detergents. Running an empty load prior to each diaper wash seems wasteful and contradictory to the whole eco-friendly premise of cloth diapering. And more importantly, I can not imagine finding ammonia burns on my baby's bum if heaven forbid there was build up in the washing machine or harm done to the diapers...

What do you think? Experiences, opinions?

  • We haven't had issues.  Why not just use Charlie's for all laundry?  We do this and have found that it gets the clothes cleaner than other detergents.  It is quite cheap also compared to many.

I also love charlies soap. I use it for all of my laundry, its a lot cheaper than the other detergents I was using. I have never had a stink or repelling issue either. I have heard it works better in soft water though, GL!

  • We use Charlie's for our clothes and have never had issues.  I did read some negative reviews (regarding the ammonia burns) prior to first trying it, but I've never had issues.  There will be babies who are sensitive to pretty much any detergent.

  • We use Charlie's on all our laundry, as well. We love it- its so much cheaper and easier than the liquid plus softener combo. Also, no detergent problems for us and we have an HE machine, I just always double rinse the diapers.

  • Ok, thank you all! I was considering switching to just the Charlie's for all our laundry but wasn't sure if it would do the job. But I guess that's ridiculous considering I'm trusting it to get poop out of diapers.

Im trying not to have anxiety about problems before there are actual problems but when I read about the ammonia burns and did myself the disservice of googling I almost died. Thanks again!
