Babies: 0 - 3 Months

naps: times/day, length?

How many times a day does/did your 2 month old nap?  How long do these naps last?  What about DC's nighttime sleeps?

After SIL visited this past week and told us our nephew was on a schedule of 3 naps/day and STTN 9 hours at this point, I'm feeling like DS is just all over the place.  He ?usually? takes 4 naps/day sometimes lasting only about an hour but sometimes up to three (usually on the shorter side).  In between naps he?s up anywhere from 1-1.5 hours before he starts showing signs of sleepiness.  At night he?s been sleeping between 5.5 and 6.5 hours followed by two more stretches of 3 hours.  Sometimes he?ll do two 5+ hour stretches, but that?s rare.

  • My Caleb was all over the board until well after 3 months and probably closer to 4. Don't worry about what your nephew is doing!

DS is just now 5 months and becoming more predictable with naps--9:30a, 12p, 4p, and maybe one more if the noon nap was short. He sleeps on a good night from 8p-4a, then has a bottle and goes back to sleep until 8ish.

  • My 2 1/2 month old typically STTN, but he is a very sporadic sleeper during the day. I usually get 3-4 catnaps of 30-45 minutes throughout the day and one longer nap of anywhere from 1 1/2-3 hours in the early afternoon.
  • There is a post a page or two back about this very subject. I just replied to it!
  • honestly, that sounds pretty good to me.  DD was a nightmare with naps & nighttime until we started forcing her to nap by putting her in the swing (it was the only place she'd sleep longer than 10 minutes.) I didn't realize she should only be awake 1 1/2-2 hours at a time, and she would be up for hours on end because she wouldn't stay down.  Once we started using the swing, it started getting better.  Her naps still aren't predictible, but as long as she only stays up a max of about 2 hours without napping, and as long as her naps are at least 30 minutes with one good 90 minute or more nap a day, I'm happy & she's pretty happy too.  She's happiest when she naps 4-5 hours/day, and she sleeps from 8 pm to about 4 am, eats & goes back to sleep again until 6 or 7.

  • I'm totally jealous! I BF and my kid is still up every 3 hours. She naps 4x a day, 2 or 3 hours at a time though. I'd rather have night sleep!!

Stupid Nest posted that before I was ready...anyway, I noticed that your DC is a few weeks younger.  DS started lengthening his night sleep right around where you are now, so I guess there's hope that it will happen soon!

  • DS will take 3 naps a day about 1-2 hours each (sometimes the longer naps are broken up into shorter naps where he'll go back to sleep with some patting).  He's up for about 1-1.5 hours before getting sleepy.  At night, he does two 5-6 hour stretches.

  • wow - I'm jealous, too.  My DS's daytime naps vary from 45 minutes to 3 hours.  He can really only be awake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours before going back down.  At night he's still waking up every 3 hours like clockwork.

We don't have a schedule, because our morning timeline is dicated by how the previous night went!
