Sorry, I don't know how to make it clicky.
This 8 months pregnant woman got a parking ticket while shopping at Walgreens. She ripped it up and threw the paper on the ground, got in her truck to drive away and in response the officer stun gunned her. Scary to think that the police found her and her children a threat to society.
Plus, I don't know how you get a parking ticket at Walgreens. In Chicago, every Walgreens has its own parking lot... And, when you get a parking ticket, the officer has your license plate number on file. If you don't pay up, they'll still send a summons to your house. Why shock someone?
Re: Pregnant woman stun gunned by police in parking dispute...
While it is absolutely terrible and I hope she and her baby are okay, she was warned that it was going to happen and she still chose to disobey orders from the officer not to drive away. She could have helped to prevent it by doing as the police man asked and not yelling expletives at him and then hopping in her car, after he told her he would use the gun on her.
Also, it doesn't say that it was a parking ticket. Likely she was speeding or driving recklessly and pulled into the Walgreens lot when the police turned his lights on.
This sounds a little fishy to me - like there are a lot of details missing from the story. Like you said, how do you get a ticket for Walgreens parking lot - but who knows, she could have been parked illegally in a handicapped spot or maybe there was no lot to begin with.
It seems strange that a cop would stun ANYONE for fleeing a parking violation unless there were other issues. She could have had other things on her record or maybe she was being more difficult than just tearing up the ticket. I've found that even though people are parents/expecting parents, some still behave very badly.
Not saying the cop was right - just saying there doesn't seem to be enough in the article to know what really happened.
I don't care if you're pregnant or not. To blatantly disregard the orders of a police officer warrants arrest. And then to try and just leave? I'd taser her azz too.
I would never advocate using a stun gun on a PG woman but...
She sounds like a real peach, tearing up a ticket in front of a cop, shouting curse words at him and disobeying a direct order...clearly not the brightest bulb.
Should the cop have tasered her for it? Well...he warned her he would, that's their standard protocol (according to that article) and it can be difficult to tell if someone is PG. If a woman is larger to begin with, is wearing a baggy shirt AND sitting in a car...I can imagine it's not 100% obvious. Unless she told the officer she was PG, she was taking a lot of risks with her behavior.

Ridiculous. He warned her he was going to taze her, so that makes it okay? I call b.s. I'm not advocating her behavior, but a cop doesn't just get to taze a citizen b/c she wasn't doing what he wanted her to do. If she isn't breaking the law or endangering herself or others, how does he have the right to cause her physical harm? So she was being a b. Big deal. Grow up and be a real man instead of getting your panties in a bunch some lady didn't do what you say.
Of course, there is a lot of information missing from this article. We don't know what the ticket was for. Still, police violence against the people they are supposed to protect really angers me, and we as a society are far too accepting of it. Just look at the occupy protests.
I have to take issue with this statement. HE?S A POLICE OFFICER. Not some random stranger on the street. Police Officer?s put their lives on the line every day. They don?t know what someone?s capable of ? they have to be on high alert at all times. Several officers are killed every year over innocuous things like traffic stops. When a cop tells you to do something, you do it. You can contest the ticket later in court like a normal, compliant member of society.

Cops in this city don't put up with b#ullshit, so if this lady & her boyfriend were yelling, swearing, disrespecting the officer, they take action.
I got pulled over when I first move to Chicago for not stopping completely in front of a playground. I interrupted the officer to try and explain, he put me in my place very quickly and I shut up.

?She tore up a ticket? ... there is no mention that it was a ?parking ticket.? More than likely something occurred on the road and she pulled into the Walgreens parking lot when he turned his lights on.
I?m not convinced that the officer was able to see if the woman was pregnant if she was still sitting in her car. I guess we will never know the answer to that one though. It?s a he said/she said.
Law enforcement is trained:
?ECD use on a pregnant, infirm, elderly, small child, or low body-mass index (?BMI?) person could increase the risk of death or serious injury. ECD use has not been scientifically tested on these populations. The ECD should not be used on members of these populations unless the situation justifies possible higher risk of death or serious injury. ? (ECD = Electronic Control Device)
He clearly warned her that he would use the Taser on her if she drove away and she replied that she was not going to allow him to arrest her. She then purposefully put her car in gear to drive away. I can only deduce that the officer felt that if she drove away, there was a risk of death or serious injury to the female, her passenger, pedestrians, or other drivers on the road.
People would be angry if the officer let her go and she hit a toddler in the parking lot. I think we all need to consider that while using a Taser on a pregnant female is not ideal or even recommended, that the officer had to make a split second decision about greater public safety. I stand behind him 100% based on the information that we have.
She was breaking the law. Hence the ticket. And it is illegal to harass a police officer. We weren't there, so we can't judge if the force was excessive or not.
This^^This^^This^^ Did anyone bother to really read the article with a critical eye?
Also, doesn't anyone watch COPS? Pshhht. I dvr that shiit every day.
If he pulled her over, and she ripped up her ticket, threw it in his face (what else did she say? what other erratic behavior did she display?), and proceeded to drive off against his authority/orders/warnings......... Well, Tough Shiit. Had she driven off she would have been in a police chase that would have endangered her unborn child and innocent bystanders.
From the details in the article, my opinion is that the officer was not in the wrong. The court will hear both sides and issue a decision. I have a feeling the lawsuit will be unsuccessful. Pregnant women are not above the law. I do hope the best for her and her child.
P.S. I like her limp and pained expression. Nice touch. That's what I look like after I sit on the toilet for too long. Am I right? Anyone else? ............Oh.
He would get in deep crap if he just let her go after doing what she was doing...plus, would you rather him use physical force and put her on the ground to arrest her?...or use his baton on her? Whatever he would have had to do...it would still be physical harm for her actions, and I'm sure it would be wrong in your eyes. Just becaues your pregnant doesn't mean you get away with things...just like if he were drunk and driving, just because he has a badge, deosnt mean he should get away with it. If he let her go for doing what she did, he's not upholding what he was sworn to do...
Uhm, she ripped up a ticket, so presumably she had already broken the law. Then, she was fleeing from the cop, so she was continuing to break the law. There is a serious flaw in your logic here.
It was definitely a parking ticket. NOt a moving violation.
https://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/13016756-418/top-cop-independent-authority-investigating-report-pregnant-woman-tased.html
All the Chicago media are reporting that it was a parking ticket. If it were a moving violation, I doubt she'd have a leg to stand on.
Ah, yes, I see that. It still doesn't change my opinion, though I agree that it's the only reason she has a leg to stand on.
The parking ticket is not why she was tazed. Her subsequent behavior was.
I don't think she should have thrown a tantrum and I don't think she should be suing anyone. She should take responsibly that the way she acted was wrong. The cop was also wrong. What if she loses her baby over this sh!t? Because he couldn't take some paper being thrown in his face. I am not on the woman's side but I am 100% against what the cop did. I stand by what I said about the excessive force.
This. To gnomemom: At least he didn't shoot her with his GUN. I'm sure being tazed is a heck of a lot better than being shot.
Also, different news reports can mix up information. It may have been a parking violation and it may have not been. Either way, ripping up a ticket that was handed to you by an officer of the law is inexcusable.
Like a pp said, there easily could have been a chase had she gotten away. If there had been a chase and she hit someone else, she could have lost her baby that way too. So you ladies who disagree with what the cop did, why do you disagree??? He prevented her from driving away and he was protecting everyone else that was in the vicinity! She could have easily killed anyone, especially with her SUV.
Totally agree!
So because she didn't specify that she was pregnant she deserves to possibly loose the baby? As I said, I am not defending her. But I am not on board with what he did. What if it was a 90 year old woman acting the same way? Should she then be tazed?
AGREED AGREED AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first thing out of my mouth would be "I'm pregnant!"...well 1. if I was pregnant, I wouldn't be acting that way in the first place...thats just pure ignorance. I'm tired of people not thinking of their actions BEFORE they do them!!! It's disgusting in my mind, because 1. being a wife of a police, people that don't uphold the law, or act ridiculous have MORE rights than the person trying to uphold the law and do his/her job. and 2. why can't people just be normal anymore! Everything is an issue, people are alwaysssss money hungry. Act like an adult, not a 12 year old. I'm sure her kids are going to act just like her, since she's a perfect role model!
EXACTLY!
This. DH is a cop and I know he'd never tase a pregnant woman UNLESS she was putting herself and the others in the car in danger by say, being drunk and trying to drive off. If the cop didn't know she was pregnant and perhaps just thought she was overweight, I'm sure he feels terrible. The crappy part is she'll probably win the lawsuit and ruin that officer's life.
My mind is blown that there are people in this thread defending her.
Neither age nor pregnancy status makes it okay to flee from an officer in a vehicle.
Agreed again! I'm sure if a 90 year old was acting like that, she would have been treated exactly the same. People need to stop thinking up of ways to get out of being treated how they should by officers. Just because your pregnant doesn't make you any better than anyone else, just like being 90. If your not following rules/directions/laws, whatever it may be, you should suffer the consequences. Bottom line is she shouldnt have been acting like that with child. Think about your actions or deal with the consequences.
