Ferber moms... question!

With the "checks"... do you still go in if LO is NOT crying??  DD is just talking to herself, then a bit of whining, then a touch of crying, then stops.  Then starts up again.  Should I just go in to soothe her if she's only straight up crying (like start timing 5 minutes from the start of the crying), or should I go in regardless?

Does this question make sense? lol

Re: Ferber moms... question!

  • I only go in if she is straight up crying.  Occassionally she will whine a little bit when I put her down although that hasn't happened in a number of weeks.  I would pat her belly, give her a kiss and then leave.

I have to say this method really worked well for us and the whole process only took about three nights.  It's so nice to put DD down after her last feeding and see her happy and ready for bed.  Good luck!!  I know those first few nights can be hard.

  • Thanks for your reply.

I deciding to give it a try today starting with naps.  BRUTAL.  I don't know if that was a good idea, but I know I can tolerate the crying more during the day.  It still breaks my heart... I don't know.

  • We go in only for full on crying. Honestly, at this point, unless it is really bad we don't go in anymore when they are going to sleep. I've kind of thrown in the towel overnights (due to teething etc) and just pick up/rock right now, but I am thinking of doing CIO if we have night wakings this weekend. (well before 4 am or so...after that ic an be suckered into feeding)

ETA: it is MUCH easier during the day. At night I can't turn or drown it out (hence why I've been a slacker lately - we did CIO around 7/8 mo, then the teeth...ugh...)

  • When we did it we only went in for actual crying. We sleep trained early (DD was 4 months) and it was the best decision ever. She goes down almost every night without crying (sometimes mild fussing) and even does well during naps. She hardly ever wakes during the night, and when she does I usually don't have to intervene (she will fuss for less than 5 minutes, generally, so I don't go in). Just know that it will be worth it in the end! It is SO hard to listen to them cry, but know that by teaching DD good sleep habits you are preparing her for childhood and even adulthood!
