Two Under 2

Car Seat Opinions

Currently DD is in a Britax Marathon RFing and DS is in the infant carrier.  I expect that DS will be ready to move into a convertible seat in a few months, around the time that DD will turn 2.  I have already been considering turning DD FFing around 2years.  So my options are to either buy a new FFing seat that can later convert to a booster for DD, and give the Marathon to DS.  OR I can buy a 2nd convertible carseat for DS and keep DD where she is.  Which option would you recommend?

Re: Car Seat Opinions

  • The longer you can keep DD rear facing, the better for safety reasons and the risk of "internal decapitation."  I would keep her rear facing for as long as possible and get a new convertible for DS.

This, how big is your DD?  DD2 is a small 2 1/2 year old, maybe 25 pounds?  so I still have her RF along with DS3 who is a meer 3 pounds lighter than she is Stick out tongue

My DD is 22 months and weighs about 29 lbs and I think was 32inches last doctors visit.

I guess you girls are right, I should let her stay RFing.  I know there's really no reason to turn her other than ease of getting her in and out.  Sometimes I feel silly b/c so many people I know all turned their kids around at 1yr.  But I know its much safer to RF.

I know what you mean. NONE of my friends/family chose to do extended RF, and since I turned  DS1 and DS1 around at 1 (not sure if the guidelines were out then or I just didn't know) I get the "well your older kids were fine" comment all the time.

People still think FF is some right of passage into toddlerhood, I don't agree.  Times have changed, and although most people won't be in an accident with their kids in the car it's possible. I totaled my car with everyone in it- they were all safe and yet I still get flack for RF!

  • I turned my 2 year old when the baby came because I couldn't fit two rear facing seats. My parents were going to trade us their van for my Jetta when the baby came and then I wouldn't have done it, but they didn't and I'm not turning him back around after being FF for 9 months when we finally get the van.

Anyway, our plan is to go ahead and get a FF to booster seat for my toddler and give his old seats to the baby. But we already own two convertibles because of our two cars and the old day care drop off situation. If I wasn't ready for him to switch I'd just do away with having two cars that the kids can ride in and give her one of his convertibles and not have car seats in the other car.

If you have two cars I'd definitely get a 2nd convertible because it is convenient to have them installed in both cars, so when you eventually do turn your older one around you'll already have the two convertibles.

Wow, that was long winded and I didn't say much... sorry.

I wouldn't turn her FFing just for your DS to get her car seat. You can buy the Cosco Scerena for her for the interim if price is an issue. It's a convertible and very safe but between $35-$50. Comes in pink or black. Then she could also use it FFing when she does turn and it goes up to 40lbs.
