I love HGTV and regularly watch House Hunters. I knew a lot of it was staged and that they tell people to basically say things like, "Ewwww it's not GRANITE" and "This is a great SPACE", but I did not realize that the houses they picked have already been purchased before the show is made! Interesting!

Yeah, I read that article earlier. It's kind of a bummer because I watch that show all the time and now I will be saying that's fake and so is that. I wish shows could just be more realistic if that is there permis.

Duuuuuude. I actually DVR this show (not sure why), and while I knew some of it had to be "staged" like "Wow, this bathroom is a nice space...", this is pretty sh!tty if you ask me.

Not sure why I'm so surprised, I've heard this about most reality tv...lots of "planted" stuff going on.

Booooo.

I read the article too and it doesn't bother me very much. I like seeing the inside of the homes and design choices people have made more so than the drama of which house they are going to choose.

A friend of mine and my DH bought a house and they were on My First Place. So it's a little different... but they were staged kinda/sorta in the sense that they loved the first place they saw and bought it but they made them look at more houses just for the show.

Another thing - they called her in between filmings and told her to brighten up her wardrobe because it looked "drab" or something like that.

Yep, known that for a long time. If you pay attention, the houses are usually empty except for one.

This really annoys me because it means DH is right. Every time i watch he comments on how it's all set up and there's no way that each person on the show ends up buying the house they looked at. WELLLLLL i guess he figured that out! haha

I always figure "reality" TV shows are pretty staged and fake, but I never thought this! that the owners have actually already CLOSED on the house they chose, and the other two may have even just been friends' houses?!

I have a friend who was recently on this show as the agent. When I saw the article I asked about it, and he said that the couple had already closed on the house but wanted to do the show, and he just had to find a bunch of similar houses in their price range. The producers narrowed it down to two that they then ended up visiting and said made up things about.

Yeah me too. I thought it was a little odd that they used friends' homes and had already purchased one, but i mainly watch for decor and paint color ideas for our home!

A friend of mine was on the show - she bought her house and they did a little bit of filming ahead of time, but the rest of the filming was scheduled a while after she bought the house.
