Flat head due to rock n play?

We love the rnp and are so thankful for it. Especially since the last 3 nights she's slept 8.5 hours. However I noticed the back of her head is flat. It's gotta be from the rnp... Since all say she lays on me or us carried by me. What can i do about this. I really don't want to give up the rock and play so soon ( we just got it 10 days ago). But I will do what I need to, to keep her head from getting any worse. Any tips? Besides not using it anymore?

Re: Flat head due to rock n play?

  • Hmmm.... maybe just more tummy time?  DD has been in the RNP since day one and doesn't have flat head.

  • How long have you been using it? Just think its a little early for that to be happening. My pediatrician checks for this. She said to just rotate his head while he was in there to prevent it ( and in the swing).

  • My LO has a flat spot too and sleeps in a RNP but I think it's less the RNP and more just sleeping on his back and when they're little they sleep a lot! I also think some babies are more susceptible for whatever reason. We are trying more tummy time, turning his head side to side, using his exersaucer etc. I had one doc try to send me to a specialist and several others tell me in most cases unless it is severe they will grow out of it as they start sitting up more

We have used our RNP daily and to sleep in at night up until last weekend when we moved upstairs.  No head issues.  Now DD takes her daytime naps on a boppy lounger and I have noticed that her head is getting flat from that.  I have been trying to put her in something different for each nap now today to make it stop.

  • I have been told chiropractic can help. sometimes LO k their head in one position because that is the most comfortable way for them. An adjustment may help.

  • Rotate the rnp so it's facing the other direction. Then, things like sounds and lights come from the other direction, and the baby will likely turn her head the other direction and it won't be flat.

  • I think mine has a flat head from the RnP...but it's my only option right now. she also has mild torticollis, so whenever I turn her head she puts it in the (same) position that's comfortable for her, causing the flat head.

  • DD has a flat spot on the back of her head and sleeps in the RnP exclusively. She doesn't turn her head to the side when she sleeps so turning the RnP around won't help. We try to keep her off her back whenever she's awake but she's a great sleeper!  I think it'll get better when she gets better at tummy time and starts to sit up. I wouldn't stress it unless your pedi does.

  • I'm having the same issue with my little one and the PnP( used exclusively). However, he is approaching the weight limit allowed (15lbs) and he is 13lbs now. This weekend, hubby and I are moving him into the mini crib for the next 2 months, then the big crib in his room. Hoping the mini crib mattress which is different than the PnP ut only will help make a difference. Also trying to increase tummy time and just got him a jumperroo to allow him to sit up more independently while playing. Even during the day in the PnP, I do allow some tummy nap time, but only when I am near him sitting. Starting to make a difference. Try some tummy nap time when you are sitting around in the day time and can keep a close eye on LO.
  • I found so many reviews about getting flat head from the RnP and it made me nervous to get one since my DS had a flat. I asked my pedi and he said that It's the fact that they are sitting up with pressure on the head. My son got his from the bouncy chair. Some babies are more likely to have a problem with it. I've heard putting more cushion under the head will help. I ended up waiting on getting an RnP because I'm completely paranoid about flat head. My DS almost had to have a helmet and to this day has a flatter head.

There is a 15 pound weight limit? I didn't know this. My LO is almost 12 pounds already. I guess we shouldn't even bother at this point!

  • For the bassinet and changing table usage there is a 15lb weight limit, but will be used as a play pen when that time comes. Smile IDK what the wieght limit is on the RnP...just the PnP am I familiar with.

  • Where did you see a 15 lb weight limit? On the FP website it says 25 lbs.

My LO has been sleeping in the RNP for the last month. He's about 11 weeks and has been sleeping for 9-10 hour stretches in it when he's swaddled so I love it. I don't really understand why people think it would cause a flat head more than sleeping in a regular crib. Babies spend a lot of time sleeping/laying on their back- I don't think you could really pinpoint it being one thing over another. I think some babies are just more susceptible to a flat head than others. I wouldn't stay away from the RNP for that reason.

  • Positional plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) is caused when a babies head is in the same exact position over and over. Bouncy seats, swings, rnp, car seats, and the back to sleep initiative have all increased the amount of sleep babies spend on their backs. During the day do as much tummy time as possible when awake (we do 2 hours) and carry the baby when out (I leave the car seat in the car and use my Britax carrier when out and about. Also, when you lay them down to sleep rotate their head, one night facing left, the next night facing right. My daughter has Torticollis and we have to be very conscious of her head position since she can't turn her head on her own.
