When should I tell my parents were pregnant??

My husband and I have been contemplating when to tell my parents. It's their 1st grandchild and I'm bursting at the seams. I don't want to keep it from them for too long. I know my mom would want to be there for me during my blah days, but when is it considered "safe" to tell family and loved one's??

I would greatly appreciate your feedback

Thank You in advance.

  • When you feel you are ready to tell them. Everyone is different on when they want to tell.

  • We told right away with DD and we did this time too, but I know I'm also the type of person who would want to turn to my family and closest friends for support with a loss.

  • We also told everyone right away with our first LO. I love support from friends & family and i would want that support group if something had happened. This time around, there are a few close friends that know but as a whole, the in-laws, parents & public don't know. We are going to hide it as long as possible until I can't hide it anymore because we really don't want lectures on how close our kids are going to be.
  • It's a very personal decision.  TBH, there's no 'safe' time to tell.  Unfortunately, things can happen at any stage of pregnancy.  If you want to tell your parents but keep it a secret from everyone else, do it!

  • We are doing a split approach.  As we had to work with an RE to get here, most of our family and closest friends know we were waiting to find out.  As soon as we got our BFP we made 5 calls to M's mom, my mom, my sister, and our two very closest friends.  We asked everyone to keep it very quiet for right now.  After we have our u/s and see the heart beat will will let everyone else that supported us on our journey know.  We plan on not releasing it to the "general public" and extended families until at least 13 to 14 weeks while a friend of mine shouted hers from the rooftop by 5 weeks.

I think just as pregnancy is a personal journey and different for everyone, so is how to release the information.  Do what you are most comfortable with!

  • We told our parents the day we got our BFP, and then told siblings a couple days later.  They know that its a secret and we will probably tell some close friends after we have an u/s.

  • I think its really a personal decision. We are waiting until July 4th just because my husbands Mom will be coming in town and we are going to tell both sides at the same time. It's the first grandchild on both sides so we want it to be special.

We are telling both sides on fathers day.  I am only 6 weeks and my 1st apt isnt until 7/2 but it just feels right.  And if anything was to happen, it will be nice to have my immediate family there for support!

  • Thank you for your great suggestions. It's nice having such great support outside of my family.

  • We're still debating this. I want to tell everyone around 4th of July, but I'll only be 6 weeks so it'll be a bit before I have my first Dr's appt.
