Anyone use stroller after 3.5?

If so, in what situations?  I'm trying to figure out if I should get rid of my city mini double.  Love that stroller but it seems silly to keep it since it's just sitting in the basement.  Thanks!

Re: Anyone use stroller after 3.5?

  • Very rarely now.

Anywhere that we would go where might need one - like an amusement park, normally has some kind of rental stroller service.

  • We never used one after the age of 2 for my daughter. For my son he stopped using a stroller at about the 3 and a half range. I also just felt it was silly to keep one past that age.

  • We pretty much stopped after 3.  I remember a month after he turned 3, we went to the zoo, we had it available, and he didn't use it at all.  I think I donated it when he was 3.5
  • I am stuck on this because DS likes to ride often (over 3.5) and DD hates to ride (2 today).  If I let DS walk, she wants to walk, and she is not a good hand holder and she is a runner.  I have to kind of be all or nothing unless I have help. I think if I didn't have her, I would probably not still tote the thing around.

  • I saw a mom on the subway yesterday w/ her 4ish yo in a stroller - they both just looked uncomfortable.  I get that sometimes its easier to just strap your kid in and go, but sometimes your kid just needs to walk, you know?

I use it at the mall (one of my girls is a slow walker...I let them out at the play area and in certain stores). I also use the jogging stroller to walk to some playgrounds. Most of our local twin friends in the same age range have gotten rid of the strollers. I'll keep mine for a while longer.
  • Yep.  My DS can't ride a bike yet and doesn't handle walks longer than a few blocks very well.  I just bought a new Britax B-Agile which is fabulous.  I would say that I probably use a stroller 2 to 3 times per week.  We picked up the B-Agile because our previous stroller (Micra Lite Fast Fold) was too small for DS (he had outgrown the weight limit by about 5 pounds).

I would keep the double since it would be very useful at places like the zoo or museum.

  • DS is four and still prefers to ride in the stroller on long outings (walks, the zoo, the mall).  He is high energy, but tires out easily...plus he likes to ride alongside DD in the double stroller.

  • I still use ours with DD occasionally if I don't have to push DS in his stroller.  Sometimes DH and I go on long walks that might wear DD out, and a few weeks ago we walked a 5K and pushed the kids in their strollers.  Also, if DH stays home with DS while I take DD to preschool, she likes to ride in the stroller, even though she doesn't *need* to and I feel kind of silly pushing her.  But there are not a lot of situations in which she can't walk.

DS will be 4.5 next month and his stroller is in the shed.  DH asked me if I wanted him to give it away/get rid of it, I said to let's wait till he's 5.  I can't think of any real reason why we need it now.  When we go to the mall he walks and he'll be walking when we go to the zoo this year.  So, I'm not sure why I'm still holding on to it?

  • Nope. DD1 used a stroller once right after her 3rd birthday, for a long bridge walk. DD2 was born soon after, and I didn't get a sit and stand one (even though I wanted to).

  • Mine turns 5 next month and uses it although very rarely. If so its at the zoo, etc.  when we have this next one in October, we are buying a Joovy sit n stand so she can stand on the back.

Using the Subway with a child can be very difficult.  I still use a stroller (chariot Cougar) with my 3.5 year old because we don't own a car, and I definitely bring our lightweight stroller on the bus and train. She is too little to hold on to a pole if there are no seats, so the stroller is a much better option.

  • Ds2 (he's 5) still used his till he was 4.5. he loved it. He proposed the other day he should sit in the stroller and hold the baby. Lol. I'd keep yours for a bit longer.

I disagree because if your child is used to walking it might work for them but when we went to NYC at Christmas-time and spent 12 hours walking around DS needed to sit for part of it. We walked from the PA parking On w 39th all the way to E 60th and back. I know some people are appalled by the thought of my just turned 5yo in a stroller but that is a lot of walking for my suburban kid. At almost 5.5 he did great without a stroller in London. But until recently we would go for power walks with the stroller too.

It may look foolish to you but maneuvering with a child on a subway or any situation where they are walking for an extended period of time a stroller is super handy. We use it all the time when we are out and about in the city. My son can walk but multiple city blocks for hours and add some shopping bags/snacks/change of clothes and you have an awful experience.

  • We are keeping our Mclaren sport until she maxes the weight limit.  Will we use it more than one time a year - probably not.  But we will keep it just in case.

DD has lived in Europe most of her life.  After 3, we really didnt use it for the sightseeing around a city (hours worth of walking and such).

But when we go INTO places where we dont want her to run, like museums you bet we strap her in.

Now that we will be back in the US, we will be doing more at home sightseeing and amusement parks (the grammys are all over this for some reason). THAT just scares me for some reason.

  • We haven't used a stroller with DS in a long time. He started refusing to ride in one at under two. We go on the Metro and into DC all of the time and haven't ever needed one for him.

  • Not really. If needed, DD will sit on the foot rest of the BOB. I am so glad I did not buy a double stroller!!

  • DS #1 is 3.5 and we still use it (my other son is 9 months). I am glad to have it, though I debated getting one. We like walks and my DS 1 can't walk for a mile or so, we do Disney once a year, the zoo regularly, the mall...he could walk, but I think it is SOOO much easier to let him ride and get in and out to walk when he wants to (we don't buckle him in).  If we are gone for a full day (that is a lot), he will catnap in the stroller or if I am shopping or doing something that he is not interested in, I can hand him the iphone or a toy to keep him entertained. Honestly, he likes riding with his little brother so I am totally ok with it...maybe I am a lazy parent, but I just like him strapped in when we are places where there are lots of people, distractions. He is a pretty good kid and doesn't really wander or run off, but I just feel better about it.

We plan on using ours in December when we go to Disney world.  DD will be 4.5.  We have barely used it since DD turned 2 but the few times we have used it we really needed it.  I Would hold onto it for a little while longer.

  • We still use ours for regular walks, going to the park and zoo.  I'm not walking behind slow-poke for long walks.

Heck, I'd be nervous to take the kids on the subway without a stroller.  I'm sure the kids walks at times, but maybe it was for safety reasons.

  • This year my 4 year old has used one when 1. going to disney world & 2. at a dinosaur exhibit (could have done without) but I was 1:3 and wanted the containment option.

  • I still use ours for ds. He turned 4 on the 1st. I use it when we go to parades (he then has his own seat and I don't need to bring an extra seat for him (plus it carries all of our stuff) and then at the mall. He gets lazy there and if he's not sitting in the stroller, he doesn't listen and wants to run crazy far ahead.

  • I was thinking of getting rid of my city mini double..but I decided to keep it until the girls are at least 4 - for museums and the zoo, etc...mostly so I have that containment option if I need it...
  • I just used it for my 4yr old last night. I used it from the car into the hospital (ER), during the entire ER visit (that is where he preferred to sit), and then back to the car. If he wasn't sick, he would have walked.

Other situations where I would use a stroller would be things like the zoo where there would be a ton of walking and either 1. we would have to leave early because the child was tired of walking or 2. I'd have to carry him all over the place because he is tired of walking. I can say though, that he (my 4yr old) is about done with the stroller. In general, he just doesn't need it and he is getting old enough that he basically just needs to suck it up and walk longer distances.
