My daughter is a great self-shoother, and an avid thumbsucker. Ever since she found her thumb about a month ago, it's her best friend:D She has absolutely no interest in pacifiers whatsoever.
I worry about her teeth, though. So I decided to buy Sophie. She is pretty good at grabbing and holding, so I'm wondering if she will take it. Is sucking Sophie better than sucking her thumb? How often do you clean Sophie? I'm sure it gets dirty collecting all kinds dust as she eats it.
Re: Is Sophie better than thumb sucking?
It's not the same thing at all. But I have no real concerns about thumb sucking. My H and I were both thumb suckers until an embarrassing age. And our teeth are fine. Neither of us ever needed braces. I figure it's not a guarantee that the teeth will be damaged. And if they doneed braces it may be due to completely unrelated teeth issues they both have.
DD1 is a thumb sucker when she is tired or upset. DD2 sucks two fingers to self sooth.
Yeah, a toy is not going to make your LO stop sucking her thumb. As a Mom of TWO thumb suckers, I would just suggest you enjoy the benefits of having a baby that can self sooth and be prepared to deal with braces (something they will most likely need anyway) later.
Also, if you are worried about speech issues- my Mom is a speech language pathologist and she says that she would prefer a kid suck their thumb or finger over extended paci use anyway.
Exactly this. Even a pacifier will not make a kid who wants to suck their thumb stop - my son took a paci (my daughter never did) and once he found his thumb, wanted nothing to do with the paci, and would knock it out sleeping and suck his thumb instead. Enjoy it!! It's an amazing thing to have a child that young that can self soothe.
