Umbilical cord questions?

DS is 8 days old (need to change my ticker) and I noticed last night his cord stump is starting to smell pretty bad. It looks like its going to fall off pretty soon and there's no pus, swelling, or redness. He goes to the pedi today and I'm going to ask, but is it normal for the cord to have a funky smell? I figure it is old, dead skin and stuff so maybe it's normal. How long did it take for your LO's cord to fall off?

Re: Umbilical cord questions?

  • ugh my son had the absolute worse smelly umbilical cord stump!! I started noticing the smell around 1.5 weeks old..I didn't know where the smell was coming from I thought it was him so I kept bathing him then realized it was his belly button, poor kid. Anyway I called the pedi about it and they had me come in to make sure it wasn't infected. I knew it definitely wasn't infected because it wasn't bothering him, wasn't red, and wasn't oozing or bleeding.

The dr checked it and said it was normal and definitely not infected. I thought it was just my kid but apparently he said sometimes he sees patients whos stump smells so bad he has to leave the door open and can smell it in the hall! haha..so I didn't feel that bad...they tend to be over cautious because if it is infected it can spread to the liver..he said infection is extremely rare and in all 40 years of being a dr he has only seen it once..so things to look out for, fever, irritable child, redness, bleeding, oozing..sounds like your in the clear!!

Oh and by the way...his stump didn't fall off until 3.1 days! I thought it would never come off ha

  • My lo cord fell off in stages the big part first around two weeks the there was smaller parts that made it look like an outy that we had to have cauterized twice before it fell off.

  • DDs fell off in 10 days. Actually, it caught on her onesie and got PULLED off. DSs is still gooey and showing no intention of coming off anytime soon. His pedi says its normal. Doesn't smell, though. I'd call your pedi to make sure. Better safe than sorry, yes?
  • Well, I don't know about the smell part but DD's cord fell off at 5 weeks and it looks like little brother is giving her a run for her money.  He'll be 5 weeks on Saturday and it's about to come off.  Hopefully today.  I'm tired of cleaning the thing and ready to give him a real bath LOL.
