Stair climbing Lo's

For those whose LO's are able to go down the stairs already- did you teach them how or did they just figure it out?  Maya has been climbing up the stairs for several months but has not figured out how to scoot down- probably b/c DH and I are afraid to let her play on them.  We have wood stairs and hard tile floor at the bottom.

I didn't show her how to climb up- she just started doing it one day.  But, I taught her how to scoot backwards to get off my bed, so maybe I need to help her figure out the stair thing too?

Re: Stair climbing Lo's

  • Mine figured out up and down on her own.  Up was driven by curiosity, I think.  Down was a trial-and-error process.  I just always stand behind her and spot her, but otherwise let her do it all herself so she learns what works and what doesn't.

  • He figured it out almost on his own.  I kept turning him around when he was at the top and then he would just go down.  Eventually, he started to turn on his own.

We would let her go head first and catch he when she started falling, then turn her around and show the the right way to do it instead.  She caught on really quickly and now is a pro.

  • I taught her. Every time she got near the stairs I turned her around and placed her foot on the top stair.
  • Emma figured it out on her own but only after she had also figured out the couch and then our bed. I still stay VERY close to her though since she's still not 100% steady all the time.

  • He figured it out on his own.  I think it is because he loves to climb in and out of DD's toddler bed.

  • I, for months, turned him around at the top of stairs.  He would get down one step then get back up to the top and head down face first.  He finally learned when he fell down two steps and somehow landed softly enough that the little crying was mostly fright.  He figured it out after that.

I don't recommend this way. It was scary all around, but he immediately started turning himself around at every ledge no matter how shallow after that.

  • Same with us. She figured out the bed and the couch too so it was kind of the same idea. We just let her do it while we are in close range until she figured it out.
