BLW's

How is it going (especially those of you that just started)?

I am trying to be chill about it, since that is the philosophy, but finding it difficult.

Do you offer solid food every day? I haven't been. It's when I have time, honestly. And when he seems in a good mood for it.

So far we have offered:

sweet potato, avocado, pancakes, peaches, banana. I am thinking of offering chicken since we will be having that for dinner tonight.

What is working/not working for you and your LO?

Re: BLW's

  • We aren't precisely doing BLW, I do both purees/yogurt and offer large chunks that I know he can't gnaw off enough of to choke on. "Real" foods he has tried - whole green beans (big fav! He just chews and chews on them), honeydew and watermelon slices, a cauliflower head, banana (too slippery - fail), some chunks of pita bread. We were at a deli the other day and gave him some little shreds of turkey, which he thought were very interesting and gummed on for a while.

  • I'm a couple weeks ahead of you but I'll go ahead and chime in.  I think we got pretty darn lucky.  Right away DD was able to get food into her mouth. She loves eating and hardly ever gags.  When she does, she coughs for a minute, spits the food out and then happily continues eating.  She's had lots of different foods.  Our favorite go-tos for something easy to hand her are bananas, pears and cucumber.  We've been grilling a lot and she loves chicken burgers :)  We offer solid food almost every day.  Yesterday she didn't have any because by the time we got to dinner she was really ready for bed, so we skipped it.  It happens and that's ok.

It's hard for me to remember all that she's had because she really does eat what we do, but:

Mini baked burritos, chicken/green chili/black bean/brown rice bake thing, chicken breast, steak, chicken burgers (lots of varieties - buffalo, chicken parmesan, bbq), cucumber, pear, bing cherries, pita bread, steamed carrots, grilled zucchini, pasta, raw tomato, sweet potato, white potato, cheddar cheese, steamed broccoli, corn on the cob, pancake, apple, mushrooms (sauteed)

  • We have been doing a mixture of BLW and purees.  At dinner I always have a vegi puree and then we give LO a little of what we are having.  Now he is wanting to feed himself more then being spoon fed.  The hardest part I have found is keeping DH calm about it.  At every little noise or face that LO makes DH comes in to take away whatever he is eating and says that he is choking.  I joke that our poor LO wont be able to have solid food until he's 18.  We have tried pancakes, broccoli, sweet potato fries, apple, pears, green peppers, celery, avacado, banana, watermelon, spaghetti, chicken and rice, and whatever else we are having for dinner.

  • If your LO goes to daycare, what food will you send with them?  I don't think I can get DD's teacher comfortable with BLW, but DD doesn't like to be spoon-fed.

We are trying our best to offer something 1x per day.  Even if our dinner isn't ready, I sit down with DD and eat a snack so it feels like a family meal to her.  She's had banana, broccoli, shredded pork, shredded chicken, steak, sweet potatoes, rice, shredded cheese, spaghetti, mango, avocado, guacamole (fed herself with a spoon), pizza, toast strips, pancakes, salad greens.

I really need to focus more on vegetables!  I'm just not as comfortable with hard vegetables and fruits.

She is doing great so far and especially loves meat!  She hasn't choked at all.  She did get spinach stuck to the back of her throat once and coughed it up.  She's still not ingesting a ton, but she is really enjoying it.  She also takes breaks from eating to drink water out of her sippy cup- it's so cute.

I think we'll wait until LO is 8-9 months old. The teachers are pretty comfortable with finger foods for that age.  Then, I'll just grab a cafeteria menu and highlight the things that LO can have and they can offer her a variety just like we do at home

  • We started a week and a half ago.  It's going.....okay.  I'm there with you about the finding it difficult to be chill!

It was a slow start, but DD is getting a little bit more into the food.  I still think she's only consumed about 1% of what we've given her.  She hasn't seemed to get the idea of "eating" food - she's more into just sucking it.  If a piece breaks off, she almost instantly spits it out.  She's had a couple of small gaggy episodes - it takes all I have to remain calm then.

I've toyed with the idea of trying purees to see if she (and I!) respond better to it.  Solids is just making me very anxious.  Despite the fact that neither DH nor I have any food allergies, I'm so worried DD is going to have a bad reaction to something (I know this could happen with purees OR finger foods).  Add in a fear of choking and feedings just aren't that fun right now.  But, as you said, I'm trying to be chill and patient.  :)

I think most days I've been offering her food, usually twice a day unless we get busy.  She has been offered:

carrots (roasted and steamed) -- wants nothing to do with them!  picks them up, one taste/lick and an awful face and quickly discarded...this has happened multiple times

sweet potato oven fries -- only offered once....not super into them

bananas -- we've offered consistently in various forms - most success with either a big chunk of banana (cut short-wise....less slimy) so she picks up the whole cylinder and gnaws OR spears of banana with the slimy sides coated in cheerio crumbs.  I think she questioned the texture at first but is getting into them.  I think yesterday bananas were her favorite.

cucumbers - girl loooooves cucumbers!!  I offer them as spears.  she just sucks and sucks and sucks on them.  She does gnaw off a little bit of the juicy part.  I also peel them - she doesn't like the bitter skin

watermelon - only offered once.  I gave her chunks and they weren't the right size/shape for her, I think

peaches - offered as slices.  she liked!

avocado - offered as slices.  mixed interest.  i think a biggish piece got in her mouth and she was gagging on it.  :/  she worked thru it but i've been nervous about avos since.

mum mums - likes gnawing on them, not sure she likes consuming them

She still hasn't really eaten dinner with us - she goes to bed so early during the week and last weekend our meal times just didn't work out.

Any suggestions for foods for a baby who likes to suck on food but isn't too into the pieces that break off in her mouth??  (Likes to suck, doesn't like to gum/chew  :)  )

  • We actually started right before 6 months. We started with really ripe bananas, avocados and pears. Since then, DD has had a lot. Breakfast is usually just oatmeal and fruit, because I don't have the time for her to feed herself. Lunch at daycare is either purees or might be solids, but it depends on what they are serving that day.  Dinner, is a mix, it all depends on what we're eating. Last night, DD had some chicken stir fry with peanut satay sauce and curry. She loved it. It included onion, sprouts, mushrooms, zucchini, red pepper and chicken. She also had some mango and yogurt drops (I made them myself with plain greek yogurt). Tonight, she'll have sweet potatos, turkey burger and probably some broccoli. Maybe some grapes.

I've found that if I just give her foods, she'll explore them. I just have to watch so she doesn't stuff too much in her mouth at once!

    thanks, everyone, for sharing.

natty - ds is the same, lots of sucking on things, but I think he gets a small percentage as well. I have been analyzing his diapers a lot Smile

and thanks for the food suggestions! I cooked some plain chicken last night and will offer some today to ds and see what he thinks!
