Anybody manage on pitocin without an epidural?

Well, doctor has decided that 40 + 5 days is long enough for baby boy and given him his marching orders. She did do a sweep on me today so I'm really hoping and praying that I go into labor naturally tonight, but it's doubtful. I'm still only 1.5cm and maybe 60% effaced. I'm booked in for an induction tomorrow night at 8 p.m. when they'll insert the cervadil and then start me on pitocin Friday morning. I'm feeling a little disappointed because I really didn't want to be induced. I had hoped for a completely med-free birth this time. Part of me still hopes I might be able to manage labor without an epidural but I don't know. I've heard such horror stories about pitocin contractions. Anybody get through it without?

Re: Anybody manage on pitocin without an epidural?

  • I was induced with pitocin and breaking water with both of my previous pregnancies when I was 3cm and 5cm dilated. I did not get an epideral with both because I don't like not feeling in control. And I thought it wasn't that bad. It definately got intense, but by the time it did, it was time to push. I will say I had short labors, under 3 hours. Good luck!

  • I did.  My induction was similar to yours - cytotec overnight then pit in the morning.  My nurses & MW were awesome.  In the morning I got to take a shower & eat breakfast before they started the pit.  They started the pit low & upped it every 30min.  I had to be on the monitors but was able to get up and move.  They offered to break my water once I got over 3cm & baby had dropped some but I declined & 30 min later it broke on its own.  After it broke they turned off the pit & let me go on my own.  I was able to labor in the tub, only have intermittent monitoring, and no more IV.  The pit contractions are tough but it is possible.  Good luck!

  • I had a 70 hour induction. At 64 hours they tried to give me an epi, due to pre-eclampsia, I didn't want one, the pain was manageable. My body rejected the epi and they had to pull it. So I had 20 minutes of relief lol. I then finished out the next 6 hours drug free. It really wasn't that bad. Labor and birth were NOT the worst pain I have felt. It wasn't that bad.

  • I only had an epi for less than 45 minutes of my labor, and I had pitocin.

  • I would try to see if you can ask about whether you can start on the low dose of pitocin first?  That might help making the contractions come, but not as intense and quick, which may make your pain mgmt a bit more tolerable.  Anyway, whatever you decide, good luck!

  • My Mom was able to deliver me after being induced with no epidural.  She said that it was just a different pace then a normal delivery. The contractions were more frequent and some times over lapping each other but that the pain was the same. She had 4 babies all without an epidural or pain meds.  Another positive is that some people can go in to labor with just the use of the Cervadil.  Just keep positive and try your best. I am going to try a natural delivery too but if it gets to where I can't handle it I guess I will take some sort of pain intervention.  Good luck! Keep us posted!

  • Good luck!  It's definitely possible.  I had DD with Pitocin and no epidural.  Just go into it with an open mind and remember that a healthy baby at the end is the goal.

  • I had pitocin and no epi. I did get 1/2 a dose of fentanyl at 9 cm. It took the edge off, which was nice. I had an extreemly fast labor though. I can totally see wanting an epi if you are in labor for a long time.

  • Well my water broke at home at about 6:30am, I didnt have ANY contractions until they started the Pitocin at about 10am. By about 3-3:30pm my contractions were so bad that I gave up and got the epi. The Pitocin had them coming back to back to where I couldnt even catch a breath in between. I dont know how you ladies do it natural...Thumbs up to all of you, cuz I gave up LOL I have no shame Big Smile

    THANK GOD FOR EPIDURALS!
