I'm a FTM and I had my 37 week appt. today and learned we may need to do a c-section. Up until this point, I just assumed I would go vaginally, so this is a lot for me to take in. I am person who likes to know about things beforehand and do research, so I need help from those of you that have had C-sections.
What can I expect for the actual surgery? How is the recovery? Does the pain medication affect breastfeeding? How long before I see the baby after the surgery? How long do they not let you drive or do steps? What other restrictions are there? Do you still bleed heavily afterward like with a vaginal delivery?
Anything you can let me know about c-sections would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Re: Possible C-Section...tell me what I need to know
I'm a FTM also and ended up having a c-section because I would not dialate past 6. This is how it went for me. I had been in labor for almost hours before we decided to have the section. I had an epidural already so they just gave me a boost of the juice to make it heavier. Everyone kept telling me that I would feel lots of pressure and pulling during the procedure. I really did not feel anything at all. I went into the or at 5:14, first incision was at 5:27 he was born at 5:44. I was back in my room by 6:15 and little man was there so I saw him within a half an hour. My recovery has been tough but that is just me, so I won't go into details. I had to do stairs to get into my house when I got home so they have never been an issue, just take them one at a time. I was told I could drive once I was off the pain meds, however I would wait until your incision has healed. Lifting was the only other restriction I had. I have still bleed but not heavily they sucked alot out before they closed. Good luck and just remember that everything is worth it once you hold your LO in your arms for the first time.
I'm a FTM and ended up having a c-section because LO wouldn't get pass my pelvic bone. I was given something so I wouldn't feel any pain just tugging and pressure like when you go to the dentist. I think we entered the room at 3:26 and our LO was born at 3:49, during this time they moved me from one bed to another, set everything up, gave me the stuff for the pain, shaved me a little, made the incision (Bikini cut) and birth our baby. After he was born my hubby went to the other side of the room and I watched them clean him up and measure him while they stitched me back up. Recovery right after was great. It lasted about an hour for me, they wanted to make sure I had feeling again and I was able to breastfeed while we waited. Then we moved to the post-partrum room where I stayed for the rest of my visit. LO only left my site for 5 mins and he was with DH going to the recovery room while they moved me to yet another bed to roll me to recovery.
I had to get up once that night to show I could stand up, this was with the aid of a nurse. I also went to the bathroom to get cleaned up. I felt well enough to start moving around but it was a pain since I had IV and a foley bag (both were removed the next day). I was told not to drive for 2 weeks but they tell everyone that regardless of delivery and I still bleed after. I can't think of any restrictions I had that were related to the c-section. My sister had a vaginally delivery and we had the same driving, lifting, etc restrictions.
Everyone is different but I was walking around like normal just a bit slower on Wednesday and I had the c-section on Monday. The only difficulty I had was trying to get in my tall bed after getting home. Other than that I didn't have any issues.
I had a scheduled c-section (all be it, last minute!) with LO last monday (4th). It was not as bad as I had expected. I arrived at 3 and began recieving fluids through an IV and filling out paperwork. At 5, the anesthesiologist and doctor came in to explain the procedure and check the IV, etc. By 5:30 I was in the OR and set up to recieve the spinal. It didn't really hurt. More like a small pinch, then a warming in the legs and up to the breast line. My biggest complaint was that it felt hard to breathe for a short period. I felt a little panicked, but they explained that it was just because I couldn't feel my body breathing/chest moving. They gave me an oxygen tube in my nose and the feeling went away. I couldn't really feel anything but pressure and it wasn't even that much pressure. LO was out at 6:01 and I was able to watch nurses and DH clean him off and weigh him while the Dr. stitched me up behind the curtain.
Recovery was pretty quick. I was able to breastfeed as soon as I was returned to my room. The numbness wore off in an hour or two. I had to stay in bed until noon the next day when the catheter was removed. I did, and still do have some vaginal bleeding, although it is no longer very heavy and usually occurs after I breastfeed. I enjoyed being able to stay in the hospital longer, it was very helpful. I don't take the pain meds as I felt they made LO very lethargic and I had a really hard time waking him up to feed. Its been over a week and I have driven LO and myself to DR. appts, but thats about it. Getting out of bed or sitting down/standing up was a bit painful at first, but not unbareable. I've never had a vaginal birth, so I can't tell you how they would compare, but all in all my birth experience was a good one. I wouldnt stress about it too much
I had a failed induction turned c-section. I had gotten an epi when I thought I'd still be having a vaginal delivery. They pumped me with more meds before the section. Unfortunately they epi wasn't as good as it should have been and I could feel some of my section. I wish I had been able to have a spinal because the section was not pleasant.
Because I had labored all day and had a lot of medication (they gave me more after DD was out that they couldn't give me while she was in) I was so exhausted and couldn't barely stay awake after DD was born. She had low blood sugar and needed to go to the nursery for a bottle (which DH gave her). I was able to hold her skin to skin a little while after she was born, maybe an hour or two later. But she had to go back for another bottle for her blood sugar. I had her at 11pm and I don't think they brought her in to actually breastfeed until 6 hours later so I could sleep a little. DH stayed with her most of that time. But everyone's experience is different.
I got out of bed the next morning but threw up so they put me back in bed. I didn't get my catheter out until that evening. I was taking motrin every 6 hours and took some percocet too (compatible with breastfeeding). It was really had to get out of bed without using my abs (it would burn really bad). Two days later I was moving around better and it got better each day. By day 4 I could shower and dress myself without any help. After a few days the bleeding wasn't too bad. I still have some though.
My OB practice is very cautious. I couldn't drive for 2 weeks but could do stairs, slowly. I also couldn't (and still can't until my 6 week appt) carry DD up and down the stairs, carry anything heavier than DD, carry her in the car seat (have to bring the seat out first then her), and no house or yard work.
GL with your delivery!
