No soy or dairy. Not a fan of coconut milk

What are my other options? Almond milk? She will take an oz or 2 of coconut milk and she is done with it. Sometimes she won't drink it at all. She is tiny and I am a bit worried about calories at this point. She eats most anything I put in front of her. But it does not seem right to just give water all the time. Ideas? Thoughts?

  • I like almond milk, but I don't think it has near the amount of fat she needs. When was the last time you tried dairy or soy? Most kids grow out of their intolerance around a year.. some  much earlier. I know some kids that cannot have cow's milk can have yogurt b/c of how the proteins are already broken down... or something like that?

  • Almond milk, rice milk, and I think I've seen hemp milk mentioned. Ev really likes almond, but it doesn't have many calories (60 per cup for the original kind, it's an extra 30 if you get the vanilla though). The pedi said we could try adding foods with more healthy fat/calories to make up for it (like peanut butter, avocado, olive oil, etc.). I guess we'll see at his 15 month appointment if it causes a drop in weight - if it does I'm not sure what the next step will be :(.

We tried yogurt drops and cheese about 2-3 months ago. 2 solid days of screaming with painful gas. Tried soy yogurt around that time too. Same deal.

  • Two to three months could be all the time they need. I'm not saying try it tomorrow or anything, but typically they do grow out of the intolerance. So, this could be temporary (another few months maybe.. )

Also, you can use olive oil and avocados to really up the fat/calories for your son.

My friend's child was underweight and they had to (and still do) have to use a ton of butter and olive oil to help get the extra fat and calories into her.

I know you can't use butter, but definitely try steaming veggies and then lightly saute them in some olive oil? Another thing.. many kids have issues going from breast milk to WCM too.. and it is an adjustment.. have you tried BM/coconut milk combo to wean them off the BM or if it was formula.. formula/cm mixed to introduce the new taste?

I would honestly try again.  Both of my kiddies had this and literally were better two months later after my initial food challenge.  Try a baked item that has milk in it.  Also, it may take time for LO to be okay with new "milk" item.  Same is happening with my kiddie with cows milk.  It takes a while.  My gastro recommends doing a 1/4 with formula and then gradually increasing it.  Otherwise, my cousins kids were all recommended to do rice milk since they were allergic to cows milk.

We haven't made the switch completely, but we are going with almond milk.  My pedi said almond or coconut.  Rice milk does not have the same calcium or healthy fats, so it's not a good option for the little guys.

We have MSPI and although I had hoped with everything in me that she was one of the ones that outgrew it by one, we have not.  My doctor said to just stay off of diary/soy until 2.  Most outgrow it by one, but the age range really is 6 months to 2 years.  We just did smash cake pictures with regular buttercream frosting and it was apparent later that night that we are not over it!  My doctor said that if you push it now (and keep causing issues on the inside), then we could be setting ourselves up for further issues down the road.

Also, there is almond and coconut yogurt!  I just found this out and was super excited.  We tried regular yogurt and that was a no go as well.

  • We started with Almond Milk, but he was loosing weight. We switched to the Vanilla Flavored one and that helped some, but were still having some weight issues. We now do a 50/50 blend of Almond and Hemp Milk both Vanilla flavored. Breastmilk is really sweet and has a lot of natural sugar in it, so I am not worried about the sugar. It makes it so each bottle has about 115 calories rather than 90 or 60 with just using Almond Milk.

He loves it. He actually likes the Hemp Milk Best. Our nanny acciedently gave him a veggie burger which had dairy in it. The next day he randomly puked twice. Not sure if it is related or not. She felt awful. I said it happens and it is not a big deal.

We are doing 1 oz of hemp to every 5 oz of BM.  LO did not notice the differnce but it seems to me like he is plumping up!  He has always been quite skinny and I am happy to see him gain weight.

We did the decrease formula ratio thing with the coconut milk. That was ok until we hit 100%coconut milk. She does love the coconut milk yogurt though. Small amounts of baked in milk is ok. 2-3 yogurt drops a day is also fine.

I also could not have dairy when I breastfed otherwise it was the same deal with the painful gas. (weened at 6 months)
