NBR - Somebody tell me...

... removing all four of my wisdom teeth at once won't kill me. I'm dreading the heck out of this surgery.

Re: NBR - Somebody tell me...

  • It sucks but it's so much better to get it out of the way all at once. And it will definitely not kill you.

My one word of caution: Tape your pain meds to something that will remind you to eat (like a fork or something unexpected). I woke up in a lot of pain the first night and didn't remember to eat before I took a pill, and the vomiting was just about as unpleasant as you can imagine. Besides that the recovery wasn't bad. Yum ice cream.

Thanks, Leap. My dentist has been telling me to do it for yeeeeeeeeeeeears because my teeth are messed up and would cause an infection that, in his words at the time (all the multiple times he said them), "won't be pleasant." Yeah, it hurts like madness covered with poo-laden gunpowder.

Did they give you general anesthesia? That's the thing for me... I HATE not being in control. HATE it.

  • It won't kill you, and you should hope that they put you out for the procedure!  Do you really want to be awake for that?! I got all four out at once, and the biggest issue I had was the darvocet.  It'll be over soon :)
  • Delurking to reassure you :)

I had all four of mine out at once when I was eighteen. If you're getting general anesthesia it can be a little weird and some of the side effects are strange - one of the side effects can be random sobbing and the guy next to me in recovery was bawling the whole time - but they wear off pretty quickly. Make sure you follow the doc's directions and you'll be good.
My only other tip is that when I got home I was still really loopy from all the meds and ended up watching a random scary movie on TV which was made even worse by all the meds, so maybe stick to friendly shows :) You'll do great!

I will spare you my gross wisdom teeth extraction stories, but I do recommend getting knocked the hell out.  I can also be a bit of a control freak and according to my wife, who they brought in when I was waking up, I was completely obsessed with knowing where my glasses were.  But I'm so glad I don't remember anything that happened.  They gave me nitrous oxide to relax me, then put the IV in.  Next thing I knew it was over.

Also, on my way out the nurse handed me a half gallon of Brigham's ice cream and told me to eat it all.  I happily obliged.

  • I had my done about 10y ago under concious sedation. Tips I took away from the procedure. I brought a towel to wipe my mouth in the car on the way home. Don't bring a white towel. It looked like someone was murdered. Mc Donald's plain cheeseburgers are the best post wisdom teeth meal: easily ripped into little pieces and placed in the back of your mouth.  Make sure you have good childcare because I wouldn't of wanted any child rearing responsibilites for at least 24 hrs after. Day 2 was fine - no pain, but just didn't feel like doing anything.

    It'll be fine!

Try not to worry about general anesthesia.  I had conscious sedation and I think it made me feel more out of control than if I had been knocked out, because I had the uncontrollable crying side effect, and I kept trying to tell them I was okay but I couldn't, because I was sedated.  I would definitely rather have been unconscious.

Try to make sure you eat with the meds, and use as much ice on your cheeks as you can.  My sister and I both used an ace bandage to attach ice packs to our cheeks, and it was great.  Really minimized the pain and swelling.

Sorry you have to do this, but sending good vibes your way.

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate your advice. I know I should just be a grown up about this - I gave birth to a child, for goodness sakes. I should be able to withstand wisdom teeth extraction.

Part of what's freaking me out is that one of the impacted teeth is GIGANTIC. So big I might be related to a great white shark.

  • I had mine done at 18 - all 4 - two impacted and two not. It was totally not a big deal.  My mom said "well now we know what you would be like drunk" - so I must have been goofy or something.  Regardless it was not a big deal at all, at least for me.  It's been quite awhile but I don't remember much, if any, pain or weirdness after.
  • Also.  Vicodin is good.

  • I'm pretty sure I was knocked all the way out. I don't remember the actual extraction at all. It was a while ago.

I think root canals are worse. You can do it! :)

  • I had mine done about 3 years ago (it was my last item on my pre-kids checklist). Yeah, it sucked (definitely go for the full anethesia), but i'm so much happier now that it isnt hanging over my head...i was like you and put it off for...umm...a while ;)

Definitely get help with your little man - i'd say for closer to 2-3 days following the surgery.
