How much do you get when you pump? How often do you pump? Do you pump after BFing? If so, how much do get then?
When I pump, I'm only getting enough milk to feed one baby for the day. I'm worried that when I go back to work, that they'll end up getting formula most of the day.
I only get about 2-2.5 ounces per breast when I pump.
I feel like I'm running out of milk or maybe not pumping enough?
Re: Twins and BFing/pumping
I have never made enough milk to feed both-- at my max I was pumping enough to feed one twin all day. They weren't good BFers, so maybe they never stimulated my breasts enough... or maybe I wasn't hydrated enough (make sure you drink tons of water). But I have been slowly weaning since 6 weeks because I couldn't stand pumping. If I made enough milk to give them all milk and no formula, maybe I would have stuck with it.
I exclusively BF, and when I pump, I get about 5 oz total (between both breasts), unless I am pumping because I've bottle fed them pumped milk instead of nursed them, then I get about 5 oz from each side.
If you pump after feedings (I've read that milk production peaks between 12am and 5am, so pumping after nighttime/early morning feedings is most productive), and freeze the milk, you should be fine when you go back to work. You only need to be pumping enough to cover 2 babies for 2 or 3 feedings each day, depending on what your schedule is, and if you're pumping during your work day, you'll be getting more because you won't be feeding them first and then pumping. So lets say you need 6 bottles each day - if you have frozen or refrigerated enough for your first day back at work, then when you pump at work, you'll most likely express enough to cover the next day's bottles. I hope I'm making sense - all in all, what you're doing sounds normal, even great considering your babies are only 1 month old! What has worked best for me is to find time every day to pump - I do it after my babies' 7am feeding - i just lay them on the bed with me and finish my coffee , and then I don't have to worry about trying to fit it in later in the day. Good luck!
