New Job...WWYD?

I am a teacher, and I just signed a new contract with a new school this morning. I am planning on waiting until July before telling them I am pregnant. Would you tell sooner? I am kind of torn...

Re: New Job...WWYD?

  • Does your contract have a stipulation on when you have to disclose pregnancy?  Why July?  I don't think you need to tell them before you're ready to unless your contract says so :)

  • i'm a teacher as well.  i've been in my district for 7 years now.  i don't plan on telling until early August.  Summer makes it nice to hide it from school for awhile.  I don't feel bad about waiting to tell work.  The way things work in my district, they wouldn't even begin to interview for a long term sub until October at the earliest.  Don't feel too bad.  However, being a new teacher you are probably a little anxious about being out for maternity leave and want to know how it'll all work.  If that's the case, you may want to talk to you principal and HR person earlier to ease your mind of what to expect.  That way you can plan ahead.  Either way, it's your choice.  Good luck & congrats!

No reason, really. Just wanted to wait until after first Tri is over, but wanted to tell before school starts.

Thanks...I am just worried about being in a new district and having to take time off.

I am a teacher too but have been teaching 6 years and am tenured. Honestly, if I were you, I would tell soon rather than later. You've already signed the contract and they cant go back on that now. If you keep it to yourself it will look like you were trying to hide it from them. I know that doesn't make complete sense as I'm not telling my district until 16 weeks, but for some reason as a new hire I feel as though you should disclose that information. Again, you've already signed the contract which is good because they can't fire you because you disclose the pregnancy. I just feel like you would be seen as more upfront and honest if you told them sooner rather that waiting. Take that for what it's worth!

  • I am in the same tough spot.  I just signed a new contract with a new district and I am nervous to tell them.   Especially now that I am having twins and the probability of bed rest is high.

I say tell them when you are ready.  If that is July then there is nothing wrong with that.   After struggling with the same thing I have decided to wait until August when I officially start.

    GL!

  • I am a teacher too. I totally get what you are going through. I am leaving a one year only position and interviewing this summer. I won't be sharing that I am pregnant until school starts.

This was my situation: leaving a one year only and had to look.

  • I am in a similar situation. I have been transferred to a new school. (I am a sign language interpreter). I will tell central office boss this summer but my principal when the year starts. I think you are fine with telling them whenever.

May I ask what school? You can PM me if you want or if you are not comfortable that is totally cool too.

Food for thought- I dont think FMLA applies if you have been working somewhere for less than 12 months. I'd be reading my contract and talking with the super and HR asap to see what could be worked out. I told my boss (director of special ed) before leaving for the summer because I thought that August would not leave enough time for them to find a substitute speech therapist.
