Why have a middle name?

Just curious as to why middle names are still a norm.  Is it necessary?

Re: Why have a middle name?

  • I like the middle name as a way to have a family name/connection in there, without it having to be used as the first name.

I also saw a funny pin on Pinterest that said something like "A middle name is only good for letting the kid know when they are REALLY in trouble." lol

This.   lol...the only time my middle name was used was when I was in trouble.  I used it as a gauge on how far I could push the limits. lol

    So true!

I've never really thought about why we have middle names.  The only person I know who doesn't have a middle name is my mom.  Her first name ends in Anne so my grandma thought adding a middle name sounded weird.

  • My sister's First Name is Ann Marie

Marie is not her middle name - She ises the full name "Ann Marie" as her first name.

  • I have a cousin who has the same first and last name as our grandpa and I know the middle name helps with the random credit issues/name confusion w. doctors and stuff that sometimes come up. Other than that like the PPs said, for when you get in trouble :)

We have a very common last name and DH, myself, and DS all have common first names. To me our middle names help set us apart a little more.  My middle name is used in my work email address because there are 4 other associates with my first and last name.

  • I have a couple of friends that don't have middle names and they sort of hate it.  One formally took her confirmation name because she didn't like having one so much.

  • My siblings and I all had middle names. We probably didn't need them, since our last name is so rare. I think we're the only family in the US with it. No worries for mixups there. But I can see why it could be useful if you have a really common last name, like I now do. Yay for people being able to pronounce it ;)

And I think they are also good for honoring family members. We've done that with both of our girls.

My mom's name is Maria Elena. She also has a middle name. It's a mouthful saying her full name. But my family is Hispanic so it's quite common for people to have a million names. :)

  • I didn't have a middle name until I was married. Now my maiden name is legally my middle name.

It's not necessary and  my parents thought my name was too long when I was born, so they dropped any idea of a middle name.

  • I second the identity issue.....

I have the same first and last name as a deadbeat in town.  Same month & date for birthday, born 2 years apart (...how the different DOB isn't enough to separate us is beyond me......).

My middle name has helped me remove misapplied convictions, evictions, suspended license errors, etc. from my record.  So dumb, but hey, it's something to consider while you are weighing your options.

ETA:  Also, I have had a prospective employer do their homework on me before an interview via public records, and if my initial had not been on the public records page they could have mistaken deadbeat eviction/DUI/battery-of-a-police officer chic for me.  My initial on the public records page helps people understand there are more than one person with that same exact first & last name in our small county - which is pretty unlikely but true.

Necessary? No. Who cares why they're still the norm? If you don't want to give your kid a MN, don't.

Have you had any issues with not having a middle name?  Do have to commonly state that you don't have one (is it annoying?)

No I never had any issues. When I was little of course I asked my mom why I didn't have a middle name & a few friends asked me why. But it rarely comes up overall. My one sister doesn't have a middle name, either, but our other sister does.

Like a PP, I did make my maiden name my middle name when I got married, so it all worked out in the end ;)

This!!  And we figure since we chose a unique name if LO decides at some point he doesn't like his first name he can go by his middle name which is Michael and also a family name on my side.
