Re: NB Weekly Check In & Due Date List!
Can I be added? 8/19/12, Team Blue, Hospital birth with OB
Answer to the question of the week:
I want a natural birth because I feel it's healthier for me and the baby. And I'm scared of needles, so the epidural terrifies me.
I haven't always wanted a natural birth, before I got pregnant, I thought I'd be "I'll take my drugs, and if anybody else on the floor doesn't want their drugs, I'll take those too!". When I got pregnant and started reading about childbirth options, I decided to go natural.
I made the decision to have a natural birth when I was pregnant with DD. I had always planned to have an epi, but it all changed when I watched the Buisness of Being of Born. I had seen BOBB recommended on the trimester boards but didn't know it pro natural birth and then one night while bored and scrolling through Netflix I saw it and suggested to dh that we watch it. After it ended, I looked at dh and said no epi!
How is everyone doing this week? Anything new or exciting?
I am doing great and feel pretty good! I have had some mild cramping/backaches that started this week but they are tolerable and I just try to ignore them while I am at work, or lay down for a few mins when I am at home. I am doing the GBS test next week. I really hope I am neg as I prefer not to have antibiotics during labor!
*~!~!~* Question of the week *~!~!~*
When did you decide you wanted a natural birth? Have you always wanted a natural birth or what made you change your mind?
I decided I wanted a natural birth when I found out I was pregnant. I grew up in a rural area and have seen lots of animals give birth (horses, cows, dogs, cats). While birth is a big event, these animals weren't overly scared or upset by the process. Observing these events made me realize that birth is a part of life and that it isn't something to fear. The bigger problem was getting my DH on board! He was of the thinking that if an epi is available why not take it. Taking our Bradley class has changed his mind about birth and he is really into having a natural med free birth! I am glad that he is on board and ready to be the supportive coach I will need!
12/05/12, Team TBD, Hospital birth with OB or CNM
QOTW:
For a long time, a part of me just thought natural (pain-med free) birth was how it's done. You get pregnant, you go through labor without drugs and that's it. (Excepting of course a c-section for medical reasons.)
After my Aunt had her children with epidurals, I realized that there were other options ... but when she had a spinal headache post-birth, and had to lay flat on her back for days and couldn't breastfeed, I decided that the other options came with too much risk for my tastes.
edd 8/8 team blue we will be giving birth at a small womens hospital
I chose nb because I have always been told by my mom that I can do it (she did with 3 out of 4 kids). i have met so many women who had great natural births. i have very little fear about the birthing experience, most of my fear is about going to the hospital lol. im excited to see what my body can do.
i am not totally closed off to an epidural... but i would rather get it if i need it, not because i gave in when the pain picked up. but if i labor for a very long time and need a little rest im cool with it. honestly though, im a control freak and the thought of not being able to move my legs is very scary to me... so it would take a LONG labor and a lot of exhaustion to be bedridden with numb legs.
my plan is to labor at home for a long time,i would love to go in pushing!!! whatever happens i can wait to meet my little guy
I think when we started talking about TTC I thought about it and I just thought I would rather not be loopy or tied to a bed, I would prefer the freedom to move around.
After my strokes, I knew that feeling part of me numb would be bad for me emotionally, I would be panicky because of the reminders of the horrible night of my strokes. Also because of my stroke history I am on Lovenox and will be on it to the end, so I am not allowed an epidural anyway.
I am living in Scotland and here birth is handled by midwives for everyone, I still have midwives but see the OB as well because of being high risk. There is debate about induction at the moment. One doctor thinks we should let things happen naturally so that labor will be faster for me. The other doctor wants to induce so that we can stop the blood thinners to get them out of my system so the risk of bleeding isn't as much. I am ok with induction if it looks like I could go into labor anytime anyway. Pitocin is only used as a last resort at this hospital for induction, if I do get induced I still want to go natural.
We didnt really discuss the whole NB thing until our prenatal class with our first DS. They went through the pain management techniques and on the drive home, I mentioned that the idea of the epi scared the bejesus out of me. DH mentioned that he didnt really like the idea either. So it kind of went from there. I went into it with a 'see how it goes' mentality' and have been able to have 2 babies with minimal interventions. Hopefully that remains true for this third baby. I really kind of like my NBs.
wow Sweettalkin- thanks for putting this together!! You rock
Answer: I was always the girl who joked about getting the epi as soon as I walked into L&D. I was present for part of my sister's birth while I was pregnant with Ds. After she got her epi, she began to shake uncontrollably. Nothing drastic, but it stuck out in my mind. Then Dh and I took a childbirth class at our hospital. They went over all kinds of birth senarios, but focused a lot on medicated births. That's when I found out that the epi is actually a catheter in your back, not just a big shot. I can handle the idea of a needle, but the thought of a tube sticking out my back freaks me out!! So that's how I became interested in a NB. And all the research I did afterwards only pushed me harder in my decision!
Also, can you add that I am delivering with CNMs please? Thanks girlie!
I've been lurking for a while - so I'll use this as an excuse to say hello! Nothing new or exciting here though. Just trying to find a good last-minute Bradley class.
You can add me if you like!
Due 9/8/12, Team Blue, Hospital with Midwives
When did you decide you wanted a natural birth? Have you always wanted a natural birth or what made you change your mind?
I decided before I even knew I was pregnant. I've heard so many horror stories from friends that I generally knew I would steer clear. I didn't know exactly what it entailed though. Then my cousin had a "normal" birth experience with her second, pitocin, epidural and the baby was out within an hour or so. While she doesn't have one bad thing to say about the labor (to each his own) I felt like it sounded really detached. That sealed the deal (again, before I was pregnant) that I didn't want to go that route.

Heard about The Business of Being Born. Watched it with my DH and we were both on board right away.
I would love to be added as well!
EDD: January 6th, team TBD, home birth with mw
My mother had four natural births, three at home with mws. She was an OBGYN nurse and always said that the OBGYN was not as helpful as it could be. She worked under some doctors that didnt really seem to care much for th patients. Their nicknames were Push and Pull. They were known for betting each other who could have the fastest deliveries despite the natrual process. They used a lto of intervention.
After hearing that story all my life, I always knew natural home birth was for me as long as everything is healthy!
Thanks for starting this sweettalkin!
I decided I wanted to have a natural birth sometime at the end of my first trimester. Before that I was another one who was sure I'd be getting an epidural at the first twinge of pain. I can't even pinpoint what made me change my mind. I started thinking that I'd like to try to do it without meds because I'm not a big medicine taker anyway. Then as I started reading, I began to understand that I was basically setting myself up for failure by thinking I wanted a natural birth, but not actually preparing to do such. The more I read (esp. Ina May's Guide to Childbirth) the more I started gaining confidence in myself.
Now I'm totally prepared for and committed to a natural birth mainly because I know in my heart and head that I am more than capable of doing it. I want to be able to get up and shower right after, I want to avoid an IV and a catheter, I want to be calm and in charge of my body, and I really want to be able to say that I did it naturally! My mom has been a huge supporter of natural birth and my husband has also been amazing thus far - I'm excited to get this show on the road
*~!~!~* Question of the week *~!~!~*
When did you decide you wanted a natural birth? Have you always wanted a natural birth or what made you change your mind?
A friend of mine had a home water birth for her 3rd child. She had pictures posted and a link to the BOBB movie. She is such a tiny thing (the mother) that I thought, if she can do a natural birth, I can too. So I watched BOBB and started researching natural child birth. 3 years later after getting married and getting pregnant, I made my DH watch BOBB and that got us thinking about home birth, which we ended up doing.
Awesome job getting this set up!
I'd love to be added to the list: EDD-8/25/12, team pink, birth center with MW's
*~!~!~* Question of the week *~!~!~*
When did you decide you wanted a natural birth? Have you always wanted a natural birth or what made you change your mind?
I knew from the beginning that natural was the way I wanted to go. My mom had an unplanned natural birth with my little brother and always talked about how empowered she felt and how amazing the experience was that it made me really want it for myself. Not only that, but as i've researched, I really feel that it's the best choice for me and for my baby and will give us the best start possible.
I'd like to be added.
09/21/12 Team pink, hopital birth with OB & doula
When did you decide you wanted a natural birth? Have you always wanted a natural birth or what made you change your mind?
I wanted a natural birth before I got pg. I have changed my mind a couple times along the way, but now I am confident in my decision to have a go at it with my doulas help.
EDD 12/31/12, team green, LO number 2 for us, hospital birth with an OB.
I chose natural birth the first time based on fear of epidurals. Fear of the unknowns of labor had me preparing for the "what if"s, but at no point did labor become worse than the idea of getting that epidural.
After DS's birth, I felt amazing. I loved being able to get up right away and shower and walk around. I loved being able to pee in the toilet instead of a bag. The natural rush of hormones was incredible, and I can't wait to experience it again. I've also done a lot more reading about natural birth and there are many reasons to choose it, but fear of epis will probably always be a major motivator to me.
Another memorable thing about DS's birth that made me feel great: I allowed a medical student to be in the room when I delivered. (they asked me when I was 8.5 cm and at that point I didn't care who was in the room!) It was easy to tell that she had never seen a natural birth before and she was sort of in awe. I was proud to show her that a natural, hospital birth can be a beautiful reality and she got to see my OB be pro-natural birth and learn that it isn't always necessary to medicalize the experience. My OB says how much she loved being there for my son's birth every time I see her. I'm equally glad she was there - she is a wonderful, supportive care provider even though she's an OB and not a midwife.
This is so cool! Thanks for getting it started!
Update: I have my 28wk appt. tomorrow. We will be doing my GTT as well as a u/s to see if DS still has his cord sitting across my cervix. I'm super nervous. Wish me luck!
When I was younger, I always thought I'd want an epidural, no questions asked. It wasn't that I was afraid of birth, just that I was unaware of the risks of intervention and saw no reason to hurt when I didn't have to. I was still somewhat in that mindset when I found out I was pregnant back in January. Then I began my research. I read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Birth Matters. I looked at recommendations from WHO, CDC, and the US Dept. of Health and Human Services. The more I read, the more I realized that the safest route for my son and myself was to have a natural, unmedicated birth. I feel confidant in my choice, and know that if I truly need the intervention, I will take it, because what matters is the well being of my son and myself.
This week I've been having contractions on and off for four days, and lost my mucous plug, I am really hoping that any day I will go in to labor and keep thinking positive thoughts for it!
I decided I wanted a NB after watching the Business of Being Born (like many others) the closer I get to going in to labor the more terrifying it becomes but I am really working to stay positve and let my body do what it's supposed to do without interference.
Hi ladies, This is my first post on the Natural Birth board
I come over to read the posts but am really starting to think more about the birth as I am closing in on 3rd tri! I will be reading and posting more in the coming weeks and would love to be added to the weekly check in!
9/17/12: katiebug58, team blue, hospital waterbirth w/midwife
*~!~!~* Question of the week *~!~!~* I first decided I wanted a natural birth when I was about 19 and saw a waterbirth on TLC's A Baby Story. I thought it was the most amazing, natural, peaceful thing I had ever seen! I hope to have a wonderful story to share with my friends and family who all think I am crazy to go natural.
I would like to be added as well. 9/30, Team Blue, Hospital birth w/ a midwife
NB was just something that I "knew" I was going to do from the moment the first person asked me. From then on, I did a lot of research (watching BOBB, reading books about the Bradley method, etc.), and it's just reinforced that I really want to do it this way. I really want to EBF, and I know that completely unmedicated is the best way to achieve this.
Plus, I was really involved in my best friend's birth, and I feel like she was bullied into a lot of interventions that ultimately lead to her C-section (the explanation in BOBB about what happens when you're induced is EXACTLY what happened to her) and I want to be prepared to avoid that scenario playing out in my delivery.
And ultimately, I just want to be able to say I did it! I've always been kind of a cautious "scaredy cat" about things, I don't like to do things that might hurt, and I have a low pain tolerance and I feel like being able to do this will finally be something I be bada$$ at. :-)
I want to be added!
My guess date is 9/27. I'm Team Blue, and planning a hospital birth with OB.
I wanted a NB after hearing about a friends experience with HypnoBirthing, and after watching The Business of Being Born. Plus, I am terrified of needles, so this is a really great alternative for me.
Please add me! I'm new here (been lurking)
12/9/12: bluvse, Team TBD, Hospital Water Birth w/ MW
I've always just assumed I would go natural. That's how my mom, my aunt, and all my friends do it - I didn't think you were supposed to do it any other way unless there was a problem. That is, until I got pregnant and the opinions started rolling in. :-)
First Child born

11/14
Chemical Pregnancy
9/5/15
Second after severe bleeding for 18 weeks due to subchorionic hematoma

Can I be added? Due 9/26, Team Green, hospital birth with OB
I don't really feel like I ever "decided" to try for a natural birth...I don't think I ever considered including pain meds in my birth plan. I guess if asked for my reasons, I'd say the obvious - that I think it's best for my health and baby's health and I know my body is capable of doing it. Also, while I don't have a fear of needles per se, the thought of an epi kind of freaks me out. And...I'm one of those who wanted to see if I could do it.
And I did - DD was born med-free two years ago today!
TTC since 11/05...ectopic pg 4/08...early m/c 6/09...BFP 10/5/09!

Nora B...June 15, 2010...8lbs, 8oz...Med-free birth!
TTC #2 since 7/11...cycle #3 of Clomid + IUI = BFP

Malcolm...September 21, 2012...8lbs, 6oz...Another med-free birth!
Could I please be added to the list?? Due 9/13/12, Blue, homebirth with MW
I had always planned to have a natural birth. My mom had 2 natural hospital births and she always spoke very positively about her experiences. Honestly, I grew up thinking natural birth was more the norm and that epidurals were the exception just because that was kind of the "birth culture" of my family. I was pretty surprised (as a young adult) to learn that it was quite the opposite.
I'd like to be added to the list as well. EDD 10/19/12, Team Green, Hospital birth with a midwife.
Everything is going well with us. I started feeling the baby move a couple weeks ago and we had our anatomy scan this week. It was great to see our little bundle and I can't wait to meet him/her in October.
I decided on natural birth after ending up in the hospital with back issues last November. I hated the feeling of being drugged up and having little control. For the birth, I just feel better being natural and in control. I know it will be healthier for the baby and for me. I've always been interested in natural birth but my time in the hospital is what solidified my determination to go natural with childbirth.
Please add me too! January 26th. Team green. Home birth with a MW. Thanks!
Always wanted to have natural births. They've been everything I'd hoped they'd be! Even my twin birth naturally in the hospital. Looking forward to a healthy nine months and my first home birth.
