C-sections

Showering after

I saw in a post below people talking about bringing shampoo/conditioner to the hospital.  My c/s was 5 years ago and I don't remember how long after the c/s that I took a shower but I know it wasn't in the hospital.  I remember, embarrassingly, that the nurse and a med student came in a couple times during my stay to give me a sponge bath but there is no way I was standing in a shower and they never told me I could.  Of course I felt really gross by the time I left and showered when I got home but I'm just wondering how soon after you were all able to shower?  I had a hard recovery and walking/standing was still a struggle when I was discharged so I didn't even think of showering there.  I'm just really hoping that since this one is planned my recovery will go smoother and I can clean up at the hospital, I felt so gross last time.

Re: Showering after

  • I showered like, 36 hours after my c-section. It felt amazing. I sat down in the little seat that they had in there. I remember my shampoo and soap kept falling onto the floor and retrieving them hurt like a biiiitch (for some reason I decided to shower when my DH went home to get some things. That was stupid, he should have been there to help).

  • I gad my c section on a Tuesday morning and wasnt allowed out of bed until wed mid morning. They said I could shower that day. I waited until Thur morning. I rememeber waiting for my mom but then hubby came and I told him to just listen in case I called for him. It was such a nice shower. I was able to do it all alone and almost get full dressed on my own...needed help with pants and socks. I waited to shower again until the next afternoon when I got home.
  • It was about 24 hours after at most 36 hours.  Once all the IV's ect were gone I was in the shower.  I have a high pain tolerance so for me a shower was pretty easy and relaxing.  But I also left the hospital in 48 hours after DS was born.  Couldn't wait to get home and relax.  DS was somewhat planned, water broke before my planned date but was ready for it.  With DD, she was a preemie (9 weeks early) so the c-section was not planned and it was a little harder but still showered pretty quickly, just stayed in the hospital longer because DD was there for awhile so I was in no hurry to leave her.

  • I got to take a shower after the catheter was removed -- about 24 hours after surgery. It felt heavenly and actually was easier than the first shower I took after DD1 (vaginal delivery, lots of blood loss).

  • I think it was about 2 days after, in the hospital. I think I could've showered earlier but I was not up for it.

  • Thanks ladies!!!  I have much higher hopes this time around.  I wasn't released for 5 days and I had the IV in until the 4th day due to a fever and infection so maybe that is why they never mentioned showering to me.

  • I was up and out of bed within 8-10 hours after both my c/s. I couldn't take a shower until the next day when they removed my pain pump through which was at the 24 hour mark.

  • I was in hospital for 5 days, and on day 5 I left hospital at 11PM because LO had to stay in nursery for a few more days, and as soon as I got home I showered. But DH had to help me shower, I couldn't completely stand on my own for a long time, I was paranoid of falling and stitches coming apart.  I was in alot of pain in the hospital so there was no way I was goin to even try and shower there.  I couldn't walk or go to bathroom on my own until day 3.5!! This is my first baby, and it was an emergency csection, my recovery was really hard, 3months PP, I am still not feeling 100%.  Maybe the next one will be easier, I don't know.  But yea it definitely sucked not to shower for 5days!! I semi -remember getting a sponge bath from a nurse, but I was on so much medication, I didn't even care at the time.

I showered the next day. The nurse and DH helped me get up out of the bed. I walked, well shuffled, around for a little bit and then was ready for a shower.

  • I showered the day after my c/s. I didn't need any help at that point either. It was an amazing shower...

Sounds a lot like mine!!  Glad I'm not alone lol.  It is reassuring though to hear that everyone else was up and moving/showering pretty soon after.  Fingers crossed for this next time I have that same experience, the first one was pretty frustrating.

  • I showered the next morning.
  • Really?!  I'd have died if I couldn't shower asap.  My first c/s was at 11:30am and I showered early the next morning, around 6am.  My second c/s was at 7:30am and I showered that night.  I was able to stand and blow dry my hair by the time I was done showering.  I felt like a new woman as soon as I showered.

is there is difference with recovery from an emergency csection or planned? but reading all these ladies being able to get up and move around the next day makes me jealous =) I was MIA for two days, day 3, i was put in a wheelchair so I can see LO in nursery and got really sick, and day 3 I tried to get up and walk to the bathroom and almost fainted..it took 5 nurses to get me into bed and I am a tiny person.  So yes hopefully the second time around for you and me both is a little bit easier! =)

  • DD was born at 6:30 PM. The next morning a nurse helped me get to the toilet and use a peri bottle, get clean, freshen up. That afternoon I could take a shower on my own and had no issues.

they told me I would have to wait three days. I said eff that Stick out tongue

I had him on a sunday evening, I showered on Tue morning I think - that was my compromise. It may have even been Monday afternoon.

I just kept my wrist IV out of the water and didn't let water hit my incision directly. And do have your dh in your room at least (mine was with ds in the room) in case you get dizzy or something.

With all the bleeding (and sweat, I was in labor a long time before my c section) I really could have not waited until I got home.

My son was born at 4:16pm on a Saturday. Sunday morning at like 7am the nurse came in, got me out of bed, got me the bathroom for the first time & then I took a shower and put on my own PJs. Best.thing.ever.

I was there until Wednesday morning (got there and was induced on Friday afternoon)... I was there 5 nights total & took 2 showers at the hospital. Yes I brought my own shampoo, etc.

  • I showered the afternoon after my c-section - so about 36 hours after.  I was a little bit shaky standing so the nurses provided a stool for me if I felt that I had to sit while showering.  I can't imagine going the whole hospital stay without showering!

  • DS1 was born on a Saturday evening. I showed Tuesday morning before we left the hospital.

DS2 was born in a Saturday morning. I showered Monday morning.

DS3 was born in a Monday morning. I took a shower on Tuesday night when we got home.

All 3 times I was allowed to shower 24hrs later.

  • Once I was allowed to walk alone and my catheter was out they let me shower so probably the next day sometime. They just told me not to face the shower at first and to be careful with my staples. But I DEFINITELY showered before I left the hospital.

  • I showed in the hospital with both of mine. With my first, I remember it was difficult to stand up, but not impossible. They had me up walking the next day, and the more I stood and walked, the better I felt. DH did have to help me in the shower though (like hand me the soap, etc.).

With my 2nd, I recovered a lot quicker and was up and taking my own shower without assistance the next day. I did request a seat for the shower though, which was very helpful.

  • I was allowed to shower the next day. But embarrassingly, I took to hot of a shower and almost fainted. I had 3 nurses rush in and help me get dressed. Standing there in my naked, post surgery/ pregnancy body was very humbling lol. Granted I didn't shower til I left the hospital after that.
