Sperm Count Question

Yesterday I had my second IUI and we were given DH's sample numbers and they were WAY lower than last time and I don't understand why.

Last IUI (this was just last month) his total count was 109 million and this time it was 34 million...Post wash last time, we had 43 million and this time only 10 million.

Why did it vary so much?  She said that it can vary a a couple of million, but his is different by 33 million.

I know it only takes one but I really just want to figure out why it would vary so much?  and if this might be part of the reason why we haven't been able to get pregnant.  (I am unexplained.)

Re: Sperm Count Question

  • This continues to baffle me!!  We went from a 3.6 total motile sperm to a 15.1 then for our first IUI, we got 83.6 post wash and then the second IUI - just a month later - we got 23million post wash.. I tell DH to stay off the energy & softdrinks and keep the beers to a minimum to help until after we get our BFP (keeping fingers crossed) and then after we are pg, if he still needs all that, he can... but the counts still remain a mystery to me but our fertility vitamins have definately helped - without a doubt in my mind!

GL for a BFP in two weeks from now!!

  • I'm with pp-its a crap shoot. Our first IUI the dr told us she had never seen a post wash # that high yet in 2008. The second one they never even told me the # so it must have been awful but I got a bfp! This time his post wash counts were around 19 mill. I *Think* that is the post wash count is really low (and I do not know what the cut off is for my clinic) they will cancel your IUI. So part of it is just trusting the docs and letting them make the call. G/L!
  • I know stress and diet can affect counts.  His first count was really high, but I'm assuming he's had a SA?
  • We haven't done IUI, but MH's total motile sperm count went from 199 million to 251 million between SAs.  They were done three months apart and the only thing MH did differently was cut back on the alcohol.  His urologist did say that being sick can affect things.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Drinking can really effect count as can his nutrition. If you don't have him on a multi vit yet then think about doing so. It can't hurt and might help. Also stress can be a big factor, as can performance anxiety, according to my RE. So taking a sample at home vs the lab (if you have this option) is a good idea.
  • Drinking isn't the issue....he doesn't drink very often at all

    And he isn't stressed....

And he takes a multivitamin everyday along with fertility blend for men.

I just don't understand how it drops so much!  Well...hopefully, one of the 10 million gets the job done.
