And the fun begins...

I get a two week break and then start twice weekly appointments!  I will have an u/s on Monday and an NST on Thursday.  Just curious how long does the NST take? What exactly do they do?

My NST's always took a long time b/c my girls would move around and they couldn't get them on the monitor.  I'd say it took 30 -45 min but more often than not I ended up having a second weekly u/s b/c they couldn't get what they needed on the NST.

Hopefully you will have a better experience.  It's a ton of appointments but better to be safe and monitor closely.  Congrats on getting this far and hang in there.

My one and only NST before the boys were born took 3 hours!!!!! My babies just refused to cooperate, so I'm glad I typically only had ultrasound BPPs and no NST's, it was so frustrating and stressful.

Basically they strap 3 monitors to your belly. One measures contractions, the other two trace your babies' heart beats. They are looking for a certain pattern of accelerations and decelerations in the heart rates, to make sure your babies' hearts are behaving the way they should. The problem is the babies constantly move and you lose their traces, so it can be tedious....

  • Thanks for the replies.  Hopefully my active babies will cooperate for those NSTs.  I am always tired after my appointments, the NST sounds like I might fall asleep driving home!
