Not so fun pedi appointment.

Today we found out DS2 has not only colic, but a milk allergy. Guess who just became milk free? Joy. So so far I have figured out that I can eat a hamburger with no mayo or cheese :(  and chicken. Hmmm I think my grocery list is gonna be short apparently everything has some sort of milk or dairy in it.(and I cant even just go lactose free, its the protein in cows milk he can't process) We were lucky enough to know what it was because DS1 and DH also have milk allergies, just not as severe.

To top it off if this doesn't work were off to a G.I doctor in a few weeks. Until then there will be lots of baby tears around here. Poor little man you can tell he feels horrible.

Re: Not so fun pedi appointment.

  • my LO was diagnosed with the same thing at 3 days! he had a bloody poop and then once I went dairy free he hasn't had anymore bad poops.  My dr said to read the labels and diary is not in the top 5 ingredients then I would be ok.  It is tough but not as hard as I thought it was going to be.  I eat a lot of fruits, deli meats, salads no cheese, burgers, smoothies no yogurt, oreos, wheat thins, peanut butter, french fries, veggies, and more stuff.  I was so upset when i found out but i want to nurse and i can sacrifice for a year. • That stinks! I'm sure you'll learn over time what is safe, as far as food is concerned.  You'll probably have a really healthy diet, plus your little guy will feel better!
  • At least it's summer now so lots of fresh yummy fruits and veggies, and if it's only cows milk there is lots of goats milk cheeses that are super good. Good luck

  • I use to be vegan (no meat or dairy) & yeah it sucks trying to find stuff without it! But it's doable. Especially if you have a place like Whole Foods near you, which is expensive, but it works for the occasional non-dairy food.
  • I'm in the same boat. It's definitely an adjustment. Check out the blog mspimama.com. There are lots of mspi friendly recipes. It's really helped me so far. Good luck! Hopefully these diet changes will help our LOs feel better.

  • My DD1 was dairy free and still is. It's not that hard actually, but DH and I have always eaten a lot of whole foods. So lots of fruit, veggies, meats etc.  Now I have found a few yogurts that are coconut milk and she does really well with them.  I bake with rice milk and most things turn out just fine.

But if it is not a lifestyle you are used to it can feel so challenging and limiting. GL!

  • You probably already know this, but watch out for breads, a lot of them contain milk protein in them too! I have a vegan friend, so I've learned just how many things contain milk that one doesn't expect. It's rather annoying. Good luck to you!

This website is great! Definitely makes you feel less trapped.  You may want to clarify with your doctor how strict you need to be, a lot of times you have to get rid of hidden dairy as well... my hardest thing is going out to eat, I don't trust anyone and miss it!
