Transverse Baby

Two weeks ago LO was transverse at our 34 week checkup. I could tell that she moved into a better position for most of the past week. Unfortunately, about five minutes ago I felt her flip back into a transverse position. I now have a hard bump all the way on my left side and a hard bump half way over on my right side. Grrrrr! LO is grounded for a long time when she gets here.

I see lots of people posting about breech babies, but I've never seen a post about another transverse baby. Does anyone else out there have a transverse lo? What about a baby that likes to change positions? I've already visited spinningbabies.com, but I'd like to know if anyone else has other practical advice.

I'm hoping for an unmedicated delivery with my midwives, so the thought of a c-section is terrifying me. Hopefully lo will switch back, permanently, before my 36 week appointment on Thursday.

Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.

Re: Transverse Baby

  • At about 29-30 weeks this guy was transverse and I was getting worried (and I was uncomfortable). I did the spinningbabies thing and he is now head down. I have no idea if one has anything to do with the other but there it is anyhow.

  • My baby girl has been in a transverse/diagonal position since about 30 weeks.  At my last apppointment at 34 weeks she was still there.  My doctor said she wasn't concerned yet, and said they tend to make their way down to the right position.  So I'm hoping by my 36 week appointment next week she is head down, but it still feels like she's not.  I'm getting a little concerned as well but I figure there is still time for them to move a bit.  Hopefully they start making the move to the correct position for good!

My baby was transverse a few weeks ago and it started to get really uncomfortable.  She then went head down for a bit, but ultimately ended up in the frank breech position (where she is now).

I am hopeful that my baby will still flip, but my OB wanted to schedule a c-section at my appt this week.  I am still wrapping my head around that, but it's starting to sink in now.

  • remember, only 3% of babies are born breech, so the odds are in your favor.

has your dr suggested a Version? its only 50% effective, but may be worth a shot. Some chiropractic techniques are said to work as well, but the success rate data isn't out there.

    you're still early. good luck!

  • I was transverse for a long while, then complete breech, and she feels like she is transverse again today.  I find out in a little bit...will keep you posted!

Doc says we will schedule a C section for a few days after my due date to give her time to flip.  Of course if she flips, I get to go for  the unmedicated v-birth.

  • Thank you everyone! It's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm working on spinningbabies techniques and using ice/hot packs. Hopefully all of our little ones will figure things out soon. :)
