When to ditch the bottle?

So when should I start to push DS to get rid of the bottle?  I know it should be before a year, but we have tried the sippy cups (Tommee Tippee) and he's not the least bit interested. He will drink water from my water bottle or a cup but that's just limited sips.

When should you stop the nighttime bottle? DS is consistently STTN now so I don't want to rock that boat....

I have the Tommee Tippee sippy cup and at first LO wasn't interested ( I actually posted about it). I started putting it on his high chair when he ate his solids/when I was preparing them for him to eat so he could play with it. Now he puts it in his mouth, reaches for it, and often fights me when I try to take it out of his mouth to give him more food! He loves it! Only problem is that you obviously have to tip it back a bit to really help him get water. However, since he is now able to lift it himself I filled it up more so he doesn't have to tilt it as much. I'm still debating the straw sippy cup.

As far as your question... I'm no expert but I don't think you need to stop it until food really becomes the key nutrition source. I would say to plan around a year but I'm not sure... I would be sure to talk to the pedi about it at your 9 month appointment

I haven't REALLY thought about when we will start the process. In my head, I've always planned on DS being bottle free right around his birthday. I haven't talked to our pedi about weaning from the bottle because I didn't think it was "supposed" to happen for some time.

DS loves his sippy cup(Nuk Learner Cup). He has been getting one every "meal" time since 4 months old. This last month, he totally got the hang of it. I have only given water in it so far.

I don't wanna think about ditching the bottle or the paci anytime soon though. For now my thinking is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

  • With DD1 we used the bottle until she was fully drinking whole milk (13 months).  We quit the bottle cold turkey and it took us a few tries to get a sippy she liked, but she did great after that.

  • With DS, it's hard to remember, but I think it was between 9 months and a year. When he started drinking some water and was able to fully hold the sippy cup on his own. The practice with the water in the sippy cup helped switching to whole milk when he was a year old.

  • We got rid of it around 7.5 months with DS1. We tried several different cups (and put bm/formula in it to encourage him to drink) and the day he caught on, we ditched the bottle. I think DS2 will probably catch on a little later than DS1 did, but we'll get rid of bottles as soon as he figures it out.

  • With DD 1 we inroduced the sippy cup around 7 months and ditched the bottle completely at 12 months.  It was super easy with her.  With DD2, she seems to be doing everyhing later than our first.  I haven't even introuduced her to a sippy yet and probably won't for a while.  She's just so tiny still.  I just introduced solids last month and she's still getting the hang of that so a sippy cup isn't in her near future.

  • Our pedi said they like babies to be off around a year, but really no later than 15 months. We have tried every sippy cup there is and LO has no interest at all. I'm not pushing it right now.

  • I'm going to start experimenting with a straw sippy in the next couple of weeks. Ever since DD started sitting on her own, she doesn't want to tilt back for the bottle. And if she sits up, she gets lots of air in the nipple.

Good idea! That sound just like DS. He won't tilt it back and just sucks the air.

  • My oldest was mostly bottle fed.  I decided she wouldn't have any bottles after she was 12 months.  Gave her her last bottle on her first birthday and they next day stopped giving her bottles.  She didn't really care, but we did have to hide the bottles for a few days and no one could say baba or she wanted one.

My second was mostly BF, with bottles while I worked.  She absolutely refused to take a bottle starting at 11 months.  So I just put BM into sippy cups for her for while I was at work until she was 13 months then I put cow's milk in them.  That made it super easy since she made the decision!  She continued to nurse when I was around until 22 months.

I can only hope DS will stop with the bottle on his own around 11 months.  If he doesn't though we will just stop giving him any bottles after his first birthday.  He will continue to nurse as long as he wants to.

  • I offer him a sippy cup with water every once and a while but he mainly just chews on the spout part. Once we get to around 9 months I will probably start working more on that.

As far as bottles go I will wait till we are in the process of switching to cows milk instead of formula.

  • Wow I honestly hadn't even thought about it yet.

Now I am so sad that my baby is getting big.
