Tandem Nursing ?

I am hoping DD is still nursing by the time the next baby comes. If she self weans I will be ok with that too, but I have some question. Will my milk come in like it did with DD if I am still producing milk before delivery. I know that might be a really dumb question. Also, what do you do during the colostrum days?

Re: Tandem Nursing ?

  • I am not yet tandem nursing, but I have noticed recently that my milk has changed to a colostrum consistency, and there is much less milk.  It doesn't stop my 19 month old from nursing as often as she did before but she'll usually ask for water afterwards as well.

  • My son never mentioned a difference in taste/consistency before baby was born. When she was born there was apparently a change because he increased his nursing significantly. I was told to just make sure baby got the first shot at each breast in those early days, but not to worry about it much after that. Both my babies have preferred to nurse on one side at a time so it wasn't too bad.

Also, my milk did "come in" in a noticeable way, but it wasn't as painful as the first time. I also had a very skilled nursing toddler to help before it got too full.

It was especially nice because it was very easy for my baby to learn to nurse because the milk was already there.

  • I seem to only be producing colostrum now. It is a bit hard to tell because this late in the PGm my letdown is incredibly slow and my supply is late. But, I haven't seem evidence of milk left on my breast after nursing and when U squueze it is just colustrum. Anyway, to answer your question: DS has gone down to nursing once in a 24-hour period. It don't know if it because he doesn't get much, doesn't like it, or it is just part of the normal toddler go-go-go stage. I suspect #1 and 3. Even if you suppy totally dries up, your older child may still continue to dry nurse until something actually comes in again. Since DS is over 12m and solids are the vast bulk of his nutrition, we don't do any sort of supplementing. When he was still primarily on BM, I was early enough in the PG that he could still get enough (albiet my supply did lighten).
  • I just had DD on the first and DS was still nursing 2x a day. I talked to the LC at the hospital, and she said basically that your body resets and starts over with colostrum. I felt my milk come in but it wasn't nearly as painful as it was the first time. It doesn't hurt your older one to get the colotrum, although it will affect their diapers.

  • Like pp, when my milk came in it wasn't as noticable. DS1 was already nursing alot (teething) before DS2 was born, and he nursed more than the baby the first few weeks. He also gained a lot of weight (5 lbs!) from all the nursing. Adventures in Tandem nursing" is a good book (very helpful). sorry for the typos...NAK...
