3rd Trimester

When do prenatal appts. become more in depth?

I mean in the literal sense >.>

I know this sounds weird and I know several of you will tell me that my obgyn absolutely does not care, but I like to have my legs shaved and my bits neat during an exam.

At which week during a normal/healthy pregnancy will I be examined? I plan on going in prepped from here on out, but I do like to be prepared.

I know this seems incredibly silly, but it's been on my mind and I really don't need more in there than necessary :p

  • My 35 week appt. I had to be tested (by swab) for Group B strep...which I was not prepared for. I agree - I also like to have legs shaved, etc.

Since she was doing to strep test, she also did a quick internal to see if baby's head was down and if I was at all dilated.

  • I'm the same way.  I got in every week expecting an exam only to never have one.  I did have my Strep test at about 36 weeks but that's the first and last time he's looked down there since I had my yearly last july!  I am almost 39 weeks and still haven't had an actual exam. I thought they'd check to see if I were dialated or not yet.  After talking to some other women I realized (at least with my dr) he'll only check if you're having signs of labor...bleeding, cramping, etc.

My Dr is the same. 36 weeks and then not again until you are due or or showing signs of labor.

  • My dr. didn't tell me when I'd be swabbed, so at 33 weeks I started cleaning up for the appointments. Thank goodness! I was just swabbed at 35 weeks for Group B strep. He told me next week I'd start weekly internals to check for progress. I'm absolutely miserable. He said she's already head down, since my pelvic bones are splitting in 2!

  • I had my GBS swab done at 36 weeks and then re-done at 37 weeks (the lab rejected the initial swab). Otherwise, everything has been pants on. I was "prepared" for both. I had no warning about the GBS swab, but I knew it was coming and I had gone 3 weeks between appointments because I was away, so I just assumed when I got back we'd have the GBS swab so I cleaned up for it. I cleaned up for the following appointment partly because I wasn't sure if she would do an internal and partly because I was going to tell her about a hemorrhoid I developed (AND that started bleeding) between appointments, and I thought she might want to see it.

Otherwise, I don't think I'll have any internal checks done. It's not very common in our area because they don't really tell you anything until you're in active labour. But I'll probably stay tidy from now until we have the baby. DH tried to tell me not to worry about it, but I don't want to be all gross during labour. I know I won't be doing any shaving right away after birth, but at least if I'm cleaned up going in, it won't be so messy afterward!

  • I got swabbed for strep b at 35 weeks, then she said she probably won't do cervix checks until 39 weeks, unless I'm having early labor symptoms or I ask to be checked. But I know people that have gotten checked every week once they started the weekly appointments, so I guess it depends on your doctor...

  • My doctor does an internal at 36 weeks to test for group B strep.  There aren't any other internals unless there is a concern or when I go into labour.

You should ask your doctor at your next appointment when they plan to do the group B strep test.

Just had an appointment today (GBS was last appointment and results were NEG, yippee!!). Doc took one look at my sky-high bump and said he wouldn't do an internal today since I was still so high and it would be uncomfortable. Next appt is in one week exactly. Maybe then, but I'm hoping not.

  • i'm 37 weeks and they haven't done an internal yet. i could have asked for one, but chose not too.
  • I am exactly the same way - I like to keep a nice shop out of courtesy for the doctors! I'm going for my 32 week today and I haven't had an "in-depth" exam for a while.

  • I had my first internal at 35 weeks with the GBS swabbing, and then every week after that I had an internal.

NOTE:  At my 38 week internal my OB not only felt my cervix but used the duck-bills and light to actually look at my cervix, so I was really glad I had cleaned myself up!

  • With ds, it wasn't until 36 weeks.

This time it has already started since I am high risk.

  • Mine really havent, and I'm nearly done. Sure, I got the strep test done and a quick cervical check. The whole appointment took less than 15 minutes. I choose not to do the cervical checks at my weekly appointments. My doctor lets the patient  choose. It's unnecessary in my opinion. I spend more time in traffic and finding parking than I do with my doc.

  • Helpful, thanks guys :)

Considering that I'm *pretty* sure I lost at least part of my mucus plug today and I'm only 32 weeks, I'm going to go ahead and assume that at my appointment on Friday she'll go on up in and see what's going on. I believe also that the baby dropped a few weeks ago.

That, or, the baby is just heavier and I'm feeling her differently, or I just had a randomly larger amount of dc. Shrug?
