According to my OB, the hormones are contained to your uterus. That's the beauty of it.
I'm allergic to something in birth control pills, and while it's probably a filler, I don't know and probably never will. I did not have it while EPing for DS so I don't know if it impacts supply, but I do know a lot of moms who have had a mirena inserted and BF'd. No one has mentioned it (and I live on a very active local mom's board on FB)
If you want to know if you will react to the mirena, you can try the low dose progestin only birth control pills. the mirena will offer LESS hormone than that, but if you have a lowered supply with those birth control pills you MAY have an issue with the mirena. yes, a few women are sensitive enough that the mirena may affect their milk supply, but it's not a high % of women.
I go to a breastfeeding support group at my local hospital and a couple of women did exactly what AmyG advises above and found that they *were* sensitive to the progestin. Much easier to quit the minipill in a day than schedule the removal of the Mirena. FYI, several women found they weren't sensitive at all and went ahead and got the Mirena put in.

No negative symptoms for me and I've been on it and EPing since Oct.
