Question about outside and Lo.

Do you let LO crawl on the pavement? DD hates the grass but is always squirming to get down on the patio. I'm not sure if I should let her. Would you?

Re: Question about outside and Lo.

  • I have the same conundrum, but with our decks. I feel like she is going to get scrapes and splinters, but she will only sit on my lap for so long.  We used to drag out her exersaucer, but she doesnt want anything to do with it now that she can get around on her own. I thought about putting down a blanket, but she would be off of it in two seconds flat. Looking forward to responses, maybe we will get some helpful ideas!

  • I let DD go. If I know she is going to be on the wood deck or pavement then I make sure I have her baby legs or pants and shoes on. If its super hot I just let her go I figure a few scrapes won't kill her.

  • Our daycare center asked me to provide some pants and leather-soled shoes so he can just go on the concrete patio outside there...so I plan to follow their lead on that!  So far though, he loves the grass so I have just been letting him go on that.  But if he wanders to the concrete, I'll have to put on his little shoes I guess :)

I know it seems silly, but I guess the reason for worry is she still falls backwards if she looks up or behind her. All I can think of is her smacking her head on the cement.
  • I personally would not. To each their own though.

  • We let him crawl around wherever he wants until he tries to eat something bad or touch the brake dust on my wheels in the drive. He's not a fan of the grass either but we're trying to get him accustom to it.

  • I let DS crawl a bit on the cement.  If it bothers him that bad I am sure he wouldn't do it.  He also doesn't crawl that much so I am not too sure how much of it he will actually be doing.

Tonight though we were outside with my niece and her dad.  my niece loves to run up and down this one ramp in front of one of the houses.  I am off to the side holding onto DS hand as he is walking along the side.  My mom comes around the corner screaming "Emilie".  I look up to see her climbing over the rail of the ramp (her dad was right there beside me only not paying any attention), let go of DS' hand and ran for her.   I didn't make it to her (split second too late) and she landed flat on her back on the ground.   DS was so startled by all of what went on that when I let go of him he lost balance, fell face first onto the cement.  HUGE goose egg over his left eye.  I feel so bad.  Such a lose, lose situation.   I let go of my own son in a panic reaction to go for her cause her fall could have been so much worse and they both ended up hurt. :(

So a couple little scrapes on knees from crawling.  I am ok with that!!
