Natural Birth

Induction

My OB doesnt want to let me go past 41 weeks (although I am trying to convince her to let me since I have had no complications, I am low risk and no GD). I REALLY do not want pitocin but if other natural inductions methods do not work before I am scheduled (sex, nipple stimulation, etc.) are there more natural ways to be induced at the hospital that do not involve drugs? I know I am weeks away from this but I was asked to bring my birth plan into my next appointment and I want to do my research before then.

TIA!

Re: Induction

  • The foley bulb is one option that you can discuss with your doctor. It should get you dilated to a 4 and you can hope your body takes over from there. (Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.) The other option would be an artificial rupture of membranes. You have to be really careful with that because once your water breaks, they start the clock and generally speaking you have 24 hours to give birth. (Some hospitals start pushing pit etc... at around 12 hours.) It can work out fine if your contractions start right away, but if they take a while to start it can line you right up for a C-section. So I'd discuss that option very carefully with your doctor before you use it.
