Back story: For the last 2 weeks, DD has been on 100% whole milk. Last Friday, we got rid of the bottles, which wasn't as bad as I expected. She doesn't miss them. Unfortunately, she won't drink milk from a sippy, just water. So we've gone from 15 oz of milk a day to 0 oz. She will drink a little OJ mixed with milk (gross, but whatever works) but it comes out too slow and she hasn't figured out a straw cup yet, thus she gets mad and stops drinking. I've come to the conclusion that she just might not take to milk in a sippy, which is ok, as long as I cover the nutritional gaps (calcium, fat, calories, protein, Vit D).
I think I'm good with calcium and Vit D...yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, veggies, and OJ just to name a few. But I'm not sure about sources of fat. I've come up with avocado, peanut butter, and cooking oils. Is this enough? I need ideas, please!
PS- If you are a BTDT mama or you are currently fighting the milk-in-sippy-cup battle (or you are non-whole-milk mama) please pass along any other nutritional advice! TIA!!
Re: Sources of fat for a non-milk baby (longish)
We have. Currently, I'm trying three different ones. One sippy, one straw (actually two straws but one sucks so I got rid of it) and one "active" cup, whatever the heck that means. She can't figure out any of the new ones, so for now, I'm sticking with the one that works. I don't have a Nuby though, maybe I will try that. Do you think milk and/or milk with OJ would come out at a decent flow?
This probably isn't too helpful -- but have you tried the straw cup (Playtex) that's a "trainer" cup? you can squeeze it to help them get the hang of it...
Or, have you tried just a regular old straw in a cup? They definitely have to suck harder to get the liquid out of a valved (no-spill) straw cup.
Hope you figure something out!
We have the take n toss straw cup and I like it more than the Munchkin straw because the straw is hard (she can't chew on it as easily). I can put milk in DD's mouth with the straw (like a baby bird) and she likes it but she just can't figure out how to get the liquid up on her own. I am 95% sure that if she could figure out the straw, she would drink milk because, like you said, it flows faster. I've actually tried giving her a cup, like a real cup and she can drink from it if I hold it. But that isn't going to work long term. If she takes the real cup on her own, she dumps it on herself :-P Maybe I just need to be patient with the straw cup...
We have the no-spill kind, and you said it...biggest waste of money IMO. I can barely use this kind of straw myself, how the heck is DD going to use it. Perhaps if my next child is part-Hulk, he/she will be able to use the no-spill straw cup.
Have you tried the sippy take and tosses? Those are the ones I meant. She can do a straw, but she gets annoyed having to do one sip at a time and relax between (we do all of her water in the playtex trainer straw cups). With the sippy she can toss her head back and suck down a lot like a bottle, so she seems happier with it. And she was the same way with a regular cup. The take n toss sippies are kind of a happy medium there bc she can tip back and drink it freely like a regular cup without pouring it all over herself.
I have two different types of Nubys (I think one has a longer spout) and the flow is pretty good on both types. I think perhaps part of the reason we have success with these ones is that they are countoured much like her Tommeee Tippee bottles are.
Ah, fish! Good call :-) She loves fish. Perhaps we should have that for dinner this week. I've been cooking her veggies in OO so at least she is getting a little bit there.
Nope, haven't tried those. She loves her current sippy (Munchkin) and does exactly what you said...chugs like she is in college. But only with water. She does the sip-at-a-time with the milk/OJ mixture and over the course of a day probably drinks 5 oz of the mix. I will have to look at the take n toss sippys though!
(I'm sounding like a real b!tch today sorry, not my intent) but have you tried not offering her any water one day, just milk in that sippy instead? So when she gets thirsty, she'll drink it? I'd try that for a day or two, let her get thirsty and I'm sure she'll drink it.
Or, find a different sippy (sounds like your trying tons) and keep one specifically for water, and another one specifically for milk. Dunno, just a suggestion

Ha! You aren't a b!tch. I actually tried to do the exact thing you mentioned and the nurse at my pedis office said not to. Figures. I was going to only offer milk and basically force her to drink it because if she's thirsty, she'll drink. But the nurse said to offer water and milk and eventually she will drink milk. I'm not sure if that means next week, next month, or next year. In the end, DD can survive without milk. But its such a great source of nutrition! And right now we are doing one cup for water and one for milk/juice. She knows what milk looks like. She sees the white color and turns her head. No lie. She sees the water and drinks like a champ. Sometimes she will try the milk/juice concoction and like it. Other times, she hates it.
(Im not gonna quote because its getting too long and you know im talking to you OP, haha...)
You are 100% right that she can survive without milk, Hmm... diluting it with water (gag. lol) doesn't help either? And maybe try gradually adding more milk over time?
Im sorry, it can be frustrating.... I like PPs comments about OO though. Have you tried a milkshake yet? Try blending some fruit with milk and yogurt... she may love it!

Avocado
I swear N learned to use a straw because we gave him some milkshake from it (MOTY, I know). He only had milkshake the one time but he's been good with a straw ever since.
I'm glad I'm not alone! I really want to force the milk on her by not offering water at all for a day but I'm worried she will go back to hating milk as soon as the water comes back. I tell myself its ok if she doesn't drink milk for a few months or even a few years, but I'm having a hard time accepting it! I think the best course of action is to forget milk for a few days and try again. Easier said than done...
