FTM with questions! Help?

So I am a FTM and EBF my 3 week old. My question today is: How do I know when I should be switching to the other breast? He usually eats off both, but I am unsure if I switch too soon etc? During the day I feel like if he is awake he is ALWAYS hungry (maybe that is normal?) I just want to make sure I am not doing a disservice to him or to my milk supply! Thanks for any input..

Re: FTM with questions! Help?

  • Some people say to feed on one side until it's empty, and some say to do a certain time on each side (like 15 min then switch). I personally fed until empty so that DS could get the hindmilk which comes later in the feeding. I had a hard time telling when I was "empty" because DS would just fall asleep on the breast and I never really got a cue from him as to when it was time to switch, so I'd just feed until he stopped, checked on how heavy that breast felt (kind of tmi, but when you go from perky to a bit saggy/loose I considered it empty) then would switch if necessary.

And it's pretty normal for newborns to eat most of the time they are awake (because they are sleeping most of the time haha). At least that's how I felt the first month until DS started regulating his feedings a bit more. It's all kind of daunting when you first start, but I promise it gets easier. GL!

  • I can tell because my LO will unlatch or like PP said, if he falls asleep I check to see how soft my breast is.  Sometimes during the day my LO is always hungry too.  Usually in the late afternoons/early evenings he will usually feed a lot!

  • At that age, I used to just feed him until he got sleepy and wouldn't suck anymore, then I changed his diaper...which usually woke him up, then I would put him on the other side to eat as much or as little more as he wanted. Now, at three months, he's usually good with one side at a time.
