Shoulder pain and hand numb

Ok, I hav been procratinating on this.  Right around the time of my BFP I started noticing my arm was falling asleep every night.  I kept thinking I was sleeping on it wrong or something.  After talking to my Mom who had the same thing happen for her pregnancy with me(lke mother like daughter) she had numbness and tingling in her arm for the whole preg.  So I have now just started dismissing this as a "baby blessing"aka symptom, and thinking nothing of it.  However the other night I woke up and my right arm was dead asleep and aching sooooo badly.  I tried to rearrage and go back to sleep.  Ever since that night I have had the worse shoulder pain, that extends all the way down my chest to bascially under my boob.  Since its on the right side the best way to say where the pain is, is that its where my heart is.  I cant get comfortable for nothing, and sometimes even a deep breath hurts.  Since its close to my heart its worrying DH.  Now I am starting to think should I be worried too??  Sugestions or  input????

  • My only suggestion is to call your doctor.

  • Sounds like it could be carpal tunnel.  Had it from about 15 wks til the end with my daughter. It's very common, but I'd still call your doc to get evaluated.

Not to jump to the worst case scenario, but I've read that shoulder pain is a sign of an ectopic pregnancy.  I would call your doctor immediately.  FX for you!

ETA: have you had an ultrasound yet to rule out an ectopic?

  • Sounds like carpal tunnel to me...the increased fluids in your body could be putting pressure on your nerves. I had it from about 20 weeks till birth last time, it's no fun and it sucks waking up every hour to reposition your arms!

  • Well, your heart is on your center/left side (not right) so you can be pretty sure this isn't your heart. the typical "arm pain" with a heart problem would be in your left arm.

The pain in your chest/shoulder is more anatomically related to where your gallbladder is. Have you been having any GI trouble with certain foods (specifically fatty foods?)

As far as the arm being numb, carpal tunnel is extremely common in pregnancy (and even in non-pregnant people too)Since it seems to be bothering you at night try changing the # of pillows, the position you fall asleep in, etc.

I wouldn't worry, but bring it up at your next dr.'s appt.  If you start running a fever or coughing up a lot of mucus then i would go more immediately.

  • Ask your doctor and keep us updated! As PP have said, carpal tunnel is very common in pregnancy. But this would not account for the pain all the way in your shoulder and chest. Carpal tunnel only affects your wrist/lower forearm and hand and fingers.

I am a idiot....I meant my left side.  The side with my heart.  Smile

  • I wake up every night with my right hand asleep. I am also waking up with my mind running a million miles per minute and it takes me over an hour to get back to sleep.

Did you ever call your doctor? What did they say?
