Trying to Get Pregnant

The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant

Just finished  The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant by Jean M. Twenge  Ph.D.

I really liked it!  Has anyone else read it?  I know someone posted about it last week and that is where I first heard about it, but I couldn't find the original post.

It was informative and she has done a lot of research especially debunking Shettles method etc... I love her sense of humor and I found it highly encouraging especially for women over 35!

If you have read it what do you think?

Re: The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant

  • I've read it. Quick easy (I basically skimmed it). It didn't tell me anything new that I didn't already know from charting and doing my pre-ttc research back in the fall. I would recommend it over What to Expect when You're Expecting.
    TTC 1: Off BCP late October 2011. BFP #1 Jan 2, 2012; EDD September 5, 2012; m/c Jan 12, 2012. BFP #2 June 14, 2012; EDD February 22, 2013.

My super all about me birth story:
Then: Fraternal twins born at 26 weeks in 1983. Me: 640 grams. Brother: 840 grams. Family kept watch in the NICU for 5 months before being allowed to go home. On oxygen for a year and a half after being released.
Now: Me: PhD student and married. Brother: Lawyer and married.
Dad's wedding speech: Thank you to all the family who stood watch and prayed for our children's survival. Well now the little scrawny chicken is married. Who would've thought? (Thanks dad for making me laugh and cry at the same time).

  • I read it. It's my new favorite book. Really informative -- learned lots I didn't know and didn't see anywhere else (like the day of ovulation is NOT the most fertile -- it's one and two days before; and Shettles is bunk).

It's also funny, and very understanding & calming about the stress of TTGP. Has a whole chapter on techniques to beat stress. I am an Impatient Woman too!

    Highly recommend it!

  • I read it a few weeks ago and thought it was a great refresher. It came in handy to disprove Shettles to DH (since his family swears it works - sure, that's why your B/SIL have two girls when they were trying for a boy).

  • Loved this book! Read it in a day. She is funny and helpful and calming :)

So much better than another book I read. The info is clear and its short! Love short books. Underlined a few things and dog eared a couple of pages. She even as a shorter version of the whole book in the back with just bullet points for the "really impatient woman" That made me laugh, but it was actually helpful too.

Read it, you won't be disappointed!

  • I liked it and found it gave me more (as in different, to build upon) TCOYF.  Especially on the 2 most fertile days that are likely to result in a healthy pregnancy and debunking the shettles method.  Reading it helped me relax more too.

I agree, I think it's a better intro book than TCOYF because it's a much quicker, approachable read.  The chapter on managing the emotional side of TTC is really good in particular.  I'd say TCOYF is a better primer for how to chart and all of the little "WTF is going on" questions that come up when you start charting, but Impatient Woman is a better intro for a true newbie or a vet who wants some reassurance that what they're going through is normal.

  • I read it today, actually. (I had today off, and had no other plans, and...well, whatever.) I thought it was only OK. I agree with PP that it didn't really tell me anything that I didn't already know.

I have to say, it didn't make me feel any better about the fact that it's taken me so long to get pregnant, especially since I've done all the "right" things for so many cycles. But maybe I'm just overly sensitive.

  • Yes! I think that may have been me that mentioned it. It was the first TTC book I read and I thought it was a great intro. I have huge respect for the research she did and how she kept everything as simple and straight forward as possible. It doesn't go into as much depth as TCOYF but honestly I thought it covered all of the basics.

  • Just getting this back up in the forum. I loved this book! Most of the other ones I read made me feel so anxious and this really did help calm a bit of the crazy that comes with TTC.
