Acid Reflux or just Spit up (Also on 0-3 board)

I'm not sure if it's just spit up or if he really does have acid reflux.  Acid Reflux disease runs in my family......I have it, my mom has it and all her siblings have it.....so it wouldn't shock me if DS has it too.

He does have regular spit up like when I'm burping him but there are times when it's been a good 2 hours since he's fed and he's napping on his back and he starts to make a gagging sound and then the milk come up....this is where I'm not sure if it's just spit up or the acid reflux.  Any advice would greatly be appreciated!  TY.

  • Exact same thing happens with my DD.  I'm curious also.

  • This happened with DD and then she was getting green diapers. After trying to rule out several different things, including milk imbalance, come to find out she had a slight intolerance to milk. I cut all dairy from my diet and no more spit up. Sadly it is trial and error to figure out

  • With DD2 she also had a milk intolerance, so spit up alot of I consumed dairy.

However, it never caused her any pain and didn't affect her weight gain - so it was really just messy/annoying for me (as I never successfully fully cut out dairy).

  • Oh my gosh, we had this problem with DS#1. Although it was not acid reflux. He just eventually grew out of it around 2-3 months. He never had any fussy issues (like he was uncomfortable) and his pedi said it was normal. But holy cow, some of the sit up was HUGE and quite gross when it runs down your back.

We had this with DD too. It didn't seem to bother her or her weight gain one bit.  Poor DH got creamed so many times in the evenings, I told him he needed to stop shaking up the baby.

I would try to keep her head above her belly for atleast 30 minutes after she ate.  The Nap Nanny was good for that or just snuggling upright on my chest.

  • Is he upset about it?  Arching his back? Screaming?  If not he's probably a happy spitter.  My son was a happy spitter.  Spit after most bottles (I had to EP w/ him) but never got upset about it.  Our pedi does not recommend meds unless the baby is in pain or is spitting up half of what goes down (like a full oz at this age).

He explained it as babies have never eaten before, their esophagus is not strong enough to keep food down yet.  It's not the same as adult reflux.

Also, like pp's said it could be something you're eating.  Common problem foods are dairy, caffeine, chocolate, tomatoes, onions, peppers.  You can try writing down what you eat & when spit up is bad to see if there is anything causing it.

It sounds like it could be reflux. You might want to invest in a RNP. That has seemed to help my LO a lot when her tummy is messed up. She hates sleeping on her back, but she does pretty good with an incline!

    This.

DD1 was a happy spitter. She spat up after every meal and throughout the day, but it never bothered her. We invested in lots of bibs and gerber prefolds.

I agree with all of the above. My first thought is that your LO is still so young they could just be developing and adjusting to eating still, and very likely outgrow it. Secondly, some babies just spit up a lot. My DS was one of those. I never found out a 'reason' for it, nor did i feel the need to. He spat up after every meal, and sometimes quite some time later, but it never caused him discomfort or pain, weight loss, etc. He was healthy and growing, just very barfy.

  • Thanks for all the replies...makes me feel better to know I'm not alone.  I don't think it's dairy I'm eating because I hardly eat dairy.  I'm an almond and soy drinker/eater.  It mainly freaked me out because of the gagging sound he made in his sleep.

I guess time will tell if he's just a big spit up guy Stick out tongue
