Now that we're onto #2, I'm worried that this will be another huge child and another painful delivery. DS was 9.5oz and a week early, had he been on time/late I most likely would have had a c/s. I'm wondering if it's because I gained so much weight (45lbs...) and if I stay slimmer this time if it will help. (I don't intend on gaining a bunch anyways). My OB is talking about early glucose testing, etc and says I'm more prone to GD this time. I wanted to explore this theory though.
1. How big was baby at delivery?
2. Early/on time/late?
3. How much weight did you gain?
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference?
Thanks for your help!
Re: For those who had large babies at birth
1. How big was baby at delivery? 9lbs2oz and 21.5 inches
2. Early/on time/late? 11 days late
3. How much weight did you gain? 30 lbs
My first baby (now 7 years old) was 8lbs 3oz and was 12 days past his due date. Wasn't very big considering he was late. I had gained 45 lbs.
My second (now 7 months old) was 9lb 14oz. He was 7 days past his due date. I gained 37 lbs with him.
My second and larger baby had shoulder dystocia (both his shoulders got stuck during a natural delivery in a birthing center). I read that the risk of that increases when mother is of short stature (I am 5'1"), the mother is overweight (i was even before pregnancy), the baby is past due (he was 7 days past) and the risk increases even more if baby is 9lbs 14oz or larger (crazy he weighed that exact amount). Anyway, I said that to say this... My fear of having another baby shot through the roof when I read that and the fact that risk increases the next time around. I spoke to my midwife about it and she said that if I got pregnant again we would have to really watch my weight gain and I would have to really watch what I ate.
I didn't really pay any mind to what I ate in either pregnancy. I didn't eat a lot in reference to the amounts I ate.. but I did eat a lot of things that were not healthy.
IMO I think that you should just be mindful of the types of food you are eating. Try to eat healthy and small frequent meals. Drink plenty of water and so on...
Btw.. I never had GD with either one... hth
Sorry, edited to say I gained 24 with dd, and I think 22 with ds. DS is the older/bigger of the two.
1. How big was baby at delivery?
DD1 - 8lbs 6ozs
DD2 - 8lbs 10ozs
2. Early/on time/late?
DD1 - 8 days late
DD2 - due date
3. How much weight did you gain?
DD1 - 37lbs
DD2 - 17lbs (was still hanging on to 7lbs from DD1)
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference?
I didn't do much different. I think chasing toddler kept my weight down though.
my read shelf:
My son was 6 lbs 13 oz, 4 weeks early (so estimates would say about 9 lbs if he'd been full term). My daughter was 9lbs even at full term exactly.
With both pregnancies I didn't gain any weight. I literally weighed within 2 lbs of pre-pregnancy weight on delivery day both times. Interestingly I gain the weight back right after, so I go down 10+ pounds when I deliver and by a few months post partum I'm up to pre-pregnancy weight or about 10 lbs more.
I don't think mom's weight gain has anything to do with baby's size. I think it's genetic. What did you weigh at birth? What about your husband?
Also, I agree with the PP, don't use size estimates to change your birth plan. Wait and see what happens. You might be able to do it just fine.
1. How big was baby at delivery?
8 lbs 13 oz 19 3/4 in
2. Early/on time/late?
Two weeks early
3. How much weight did you gain?
68 lbs
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference?
I only have the one however, my mom is 4'11 and was under 100 lbs both times she got pregnant. She also only gained a small amount of weight and my brother was 8 lbs 12 oz and I was 9 lbs 10 oz and we were both 5 days early. I think bigger babies just run in my family.
There were other factors as well, not just his size.
1. How big was baby at delivery? 8 lbs 8 oz (not as big as yours but big compared to my other two)
2. Early/on time/late? 6 days late
3. How much weight did you gain? 52 lbs
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference? I gained 55 lbs with DD who was my first and she was born 10 days late at 7 lbs 8 oz. DS#1 was born 15 days early at 6 lbs 3 oz and I had GD. I didn't have diagnosed GD with my third but my OB suspects that I may have had it near the end of the pregnancy and it just didn't make sense to test for it in the last week. Significant weight gain doesn't mean big baby...FWIW my weight gain was higher with my first and last because they were fall babies. I swelled a lot in the summer months.
1. How big was baby at delivery? 9lbs 5 oz
2. Early/on time/late? I was induced 1 day before my due date
3. How much weight did you gain? 15 lbs
I was slightly overweight when I got pregnant so I was very careful with eating healthy and staying active as much as possible -- I work with a registered dietician who guided me through the healthy eating process... In the end the fact that I stayed so healthy had no impact on B's size.
1. my oldest was 10.4 at birth, I ripped like a piece of paper, it was horrible and took forever to heal from
2. He was late so I had to be induced
3. I gained 50lbs
4. with my second son I watched what I ate and only gained 30 lbs and my son was only 8.6oz (huge difference on the va-jay-jay)

1. How big was baby at delivery? 7 lbs 14 oz
2. Early/on time/late? He was born on his due date
3. How much weight did you gain? I think I gained between 42-45lbs, I kind of stopped paying attention at the end.
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference? He was my first
Thanks for your help!
1. How big was baby at delivery?
He was an astonishing 10 pounds 11 ounces, 22 inches long.
2. Early/on time/late?
Born one day early (39 weeks 6 days)
3. How much weight did you gain?
24.5 pounds
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference?
He's my only child, but early on my OB warned me that he was measuring LARGE. My husband is 6'6", I am 6', so he was just a genetically big baby. I am a lap swimmer, so I swam every day throughout my pregnancy. I watched what I ate, avoided most carbs and sugar. From 32 weeks on I did perineal massages with evening primrose oil as well as a cream that my birth doula recommended. I birthed him in 6 hours 43 minutes, completely naturally, with no drugs, no interventions and I did not tear.
My Blog
1.) 9 lbs 1oz
2.) 2 days late
3.) 39 lbs
Only on so far :-)
1. DS2 was 9lbs 3oz
2. He was 14 days late (I kid you not. Labor was spontaneous though)
3. I gained 29 lbs this time.
4. DS1 was 6lbs 12oat and was 11 days late, and I gained 38lbs with him.
I was shocked when DS2 was so big, especially since I gained almost 10lbs less with him and passed the 1hr glucose test. Both of my boys were very late. My midwife says she thinks DS2's placenta must have just functioned really well.
1. How big was baby at delivery? 9lbs 11oz 21 inches long
2. Early/on time/late? 1 week early/ scheduled c section
3. How much weight did you gain? 55lbs- went from 118 to 170
1. How big was baby at delivery?
DS1 = 9lb. 7oz. 19.75in. DS2 = 9lb. 6oz. 21.5in.
2. Early/on time/late? DS1 1 week early DS2 2 weeks early
3. How much weight did you gain? DS1 = 60lbs. DS2 = 28lbs.
4. If you have 2+ kids, were they all big? Did anything you do make a difference? Both obviously big babies but even not gaining as much weight with my second didn't make a difference. I guess I just have larger babies.
