Anyone else not have an official nursery?

DH and I live in NYC, ergo teeny tiny place paying lots of money every month in rent.

We don't even have an official bedroom so we are coverting the front closet (its pretty wide), into a baby nook. We are taking off the doors and the bar out, it will just look like built in shelves above.  Its not ideal, of course but is anyone else struggling with space? What are you doing about it?

Re: Anyone else not have an official nursery?

  • This baby won't have a nursery either! We rent a two bedroom house in the UK (very standard size home for a small family here) and the baby will be with us for the first 6 months before moving into DD's room. He will start out in a Moses basket and then transition to a crib in our room before we move his crib to DD's room. Our room is large enough that we can comfortably fit a crib and dresser/changing table at one end of the room but I wouldn't call it a nursery!

DD didn't have a nursery either and we did something very similar until we moved when she was 9 months. It worked great. One plus side to living in a small space with babies is that you very quickly realize what you need and what is just taking up extra space.

Even if you are not decorating a room there are still lots of things you can do to the baby's space to make it special. Can you paint inside the nook, hang special prints/photographs inside the shelves or possibly put up wall decals out of baby's reach? Oh, and baskets for keeping all LO's things organized will be your new best friend. GL!

  • yep we live in NYC too and the baby will be in our bedroom.

I may hang something over the crib. Will get cute sheets. That's about it.

  • We dont either, we have a 2 bedroom and our other child is 6, so she's a little too old to share with a baby, I think we are going to keep baby in our room since it is larger, and im just going to do a bedset theme instead of a whole room. either that, or we have a decent sized, walk in closet, and we could keep baby in there if we need too.

  • I had the most adorably decorated nursery for DS1.  I spent tons of hours and money on the perfect decor.  We moved out of that house when DS was 9 months old...and we never, not even one time, used the crib or changing table.  We eventually transitioned DS into his crib when we moved, but the pack n play was perfect until then.  This time, I bought a mini cosleeper and will use a laundry basket or something for spare clothes and diapers, at least for the first few months.  It just makes so much more sense to me (but more out of convenience than space factors).

We are going to have a computer/exercise/baby room. LOL  Alice gets a corner of our computer/exercise room.  We're readjusting the computer setup, and getting rid of my desk.  I have a laptop anyway, so the desk is more for my junk (makeup, nail polish, lotions) than actual computer.  We just cleaned out the junk closet in here so we'll have room for her stuff.  We'll decorate her corner with robots.  She'll be sleeping in our room for the first few months anyway, so we have a while to figure out where she will go once she needs an actual room.

  • We have a one bedroom apartment now (400sqft) and we're moving into a larger one bedroom in august (600sqft).  Not in NYC, but in a relatively HCOL area where I'll be a grad student.  There's a den, but it's walk through, so not ideal for a bedroom of any kind. Baby will share our room.  We're getting the full size arm's reach cosleeper to start, then perhaps a mini crib.  We might move after the first year if my husband gets a good job, but we might not.  We'll see how it goes!  Glad we're not the only ones...I was beginning to feel like an outsider for not owning a home or having an apartment with a dedicated nursery.
  • We rent a two bedroom townhome, about 900 sq ft, so baby will share a room with us and then be moved into the second bedroom which will double as our office.  We're buying a couple of canvas hanging shelves to hold baby clothing and we'll get a pack n play to use as a crib.  The pack n play we're considering has a changing table and can be wheeled from room to room.  Until this child is in a toddler bed, they won't be getting their own room.
  • NYC also here.  Baby will have his own dresser and a mini crib.  And we hung a mobile over the dresser.  All of this will take place on "my side" of our bedroom.  We moved our dresser into the hallway as an entry table of sorts.

We are going to have LO in our bedroom for the first 4-6 months...DH doesn't want to move into a 4 bedroom (which is what we will need) until the baby is ready to be in his own room (i.e. when he is beginning to sleep for longer stretches and I'm not having to get up every couple of hours).

  • I'm renting my grandfather's house which doesn't have a whole lot of storage.  There is an extra bedroom but, all of my extra stuff is in there and there's nowhere else to put it.  Gibson will be in my room in a Pack-N-Play for a while and hopefully, there will be time to get the other bedroom cleaned out when it's time to transition.

We ordered the Babyletto Mini crib in Navy, I am so excited to get it. and I have room for a small dresser (craigslist hunting) that will double as a changing table. We thought about having baby with us, but DH works like 14-16 hour days in finance so that will be good for no one. I love Mini Cribs!

Thanks Everyone! We are super excited for this LO but trying to limit the amount of (precious) space this little guy will take up.

I live in NYC too and so far me and DH are looking at one bedroom apts to move into in August (we are staying with my parents right now). That means the baby wont have a separate nursery for himself. We will use one wall for the baby paint it decorate it and have like a mini nursery. Its quite common here where I live, I have friends that have 2 kids and live in a one bedroom.

  • We're in a 500-square-foot studio in LA (with a big dog).  I kind of love it because it forces me to be more creative.  We'll leave LA when the baby is about 2 months old, but to begin with, I think she'll sleep in a rock n' play or Baby Bjorn travel crib.

We have a glider and ottoman in the "living room" for nursing and a good sized Ikea dresser in our "bedroom" for her changing table and to store all of her clothes and supplies.  The only other bigger items that I'm considering purchasing right away are a Baby Bjorn babysitter, a small swing, and foldable baby gym (plus car seat and snap n go stroller).  Good luck with your small space!

  • NYC here too - we also have a 1 bedroom and are getting the Stokke crib so that we can wheel it back and forth between the bedroom and the living room depending on what makes more sense.  We're not going to have a nursery, but will have room for the crib, changing table and pack-n-play set up against one wall in our living room.
